Wade Phillips New Cowboys Coach

Grizz:

Espn’s Chris Mortensen reports that Wade Phillips has been summoned to Dallas and will hammer out a contract to be the Cowboys new head coach.

Mortensen cited three primary reasons for Phillips’ hiring. The first was Phillips’ success as a head coach. The second was Jerry Jones’ interest in furthering the development of the 3-4 defensive scheme installed by Bill Parcells. The other is Jones’ fear of stunting new OC Jason Garrett’s development by placing a top-level game planner and play caller like Norv Turner over him.

One important aside. When asked on Sportscenter whether Phillips could coexist with Terrell Owens, Mortensen questioned whether Owens’ return was certain. Very interesting

Re: Wade Philip's next coach.

If Wade Phillip's get's the head coaching position in Dallas would'nt be something if him and Jerry could persuade linebacker Shaun Phillips to follow ! Shaun would be great opposite of Ware !

Linebacker Shaun Phillips, second on the Charger's team in sacks the past two seasons, is also a restricted free agent.

The market for him will likely not be as broad as for running backTurner. But it is likely another team would try to sign him if the tender is palatable. The Chargers will attempt to sign him to a long-term deal before the free-agency period begins and would have the right to match any offer Phillips received.

Hey! a Cowboy fan can dream right?

Re: Wade Philip's next coach.

So Phillips to the Cowboys. I don't like it. Phillips is a re-tread, and if they were going to go with a re-tread over a new coach, they should've gone with a guy like Turner who is closely associated with the franchise. Still, at least it looks like they'll wind up with some good coordinators out of the deal.

Re: Wade Philip's next coach.

Looks like some are saying it's official, others say no. I guess Ron Rivera didn't interview well because I thought he was going to be the favorite.

With Phillips, you know what you're getting. Is it an improvement? I'm not so sure it is.

Cool Re: Wade Phillips New Cowboys Coach

Based on what was available it was the right move. Phillips record is much better than you might think

From RealFootbal 365.com
Quote:
Not counting his seven games as an interim coach with the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons earlier in his career, Phillips compiled a solid 45-35 record in five years at the helm of the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills .

True, Phillips was 0-3 in the playoffs, but his Bills lost two wild games that could have gone either way. In 1998, they lost, 24-17, to the Miami Dolphins in a game that came down to the last play. And in 1999, Buffalo actually had the Tennessee Titans -- the eventual AFC Super Bowl representative -- beat, but the infamous "Music City Miracle" sent the Bills home.

The Titans ended up being a Kevin Dyson outstretched arm away from taking the St. Louis Rams into overtime in the big game, so who knows how far the Bills could have gone?

It's important to remember that many Super Bowl-winning coaches had to endure failure before triumph Just ask Bill Cowher, Dick Vermeil or Jon Gruden. As coach of the Raiders, Gruden was burned by the Tom Brady "tuck rule" play, which knocked Oakland out of the playoffs in January '02, before he finally won it all with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002-2003.

Is Phillips the perfect candidate? Far from it. Sure, it would be great for the Cowboys if Gruden, Cowher or Jeff Fisher were available, but they're not. It means Phillips is the lesser of all evils. And when you think about it, a 45-35 career record isn't really evil at all.

Re: Wade Phillips New Cowboys Coach

I like Phillips as our HC because our Defense is where the most attention is needed and from someone who really understand's the 3-4, which Phillips definitely does.

It will interesting to see who he put's together in his coahing staff. I think Jason Garrett and Saprano will work well together on the offensive side of the ball. I just wanna see more 3/4 disguised blitz package's that opposing offense's can't read before the snap of the ball...and please get Roy William's out of secondary and closer to the line of scrimmage !

Ware and Greg ellis seem happy about the hire:

Greg Ellis on 103 radio Espn:

Good move, needed move, have so much invested in the 3-4 defense
His style of play and style of 3-4 is agressive whereas our style of 3-4 under Parcells was to beat the guy in front of you. Phillips will be more creative with his scheme.

Thinks we're pretty solid across the board and with Phillips coming in, we should be fine as we were okay before december.

Wasnt surprised. needed 3-4 coach since Jerry has a lot of money invested on the defense. Norv knows offense and doesn't have experience with the defense.

Only loss about 5 lbs going from defensive end to LB.

On our 3-4, pretty much the offense knew where they were coming from.where they started that's where they were gonna be and they waited to see what the offensive line was going to do.

Ware:

"I feel, defensively, he was one of the things we needed to come in," said Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware from Hawaii, the site of Saturday's Pro Bowl. "We have so many guys that can do good things. And Wade just has an aura about him of what to do with those guys. I feel he can come in here and teach us something."

Ware also said he talked with Merriman about how Phillips gets a defense going. Ware said he was impressed with how Wade used his personnel, especially on blitzes.

I'm not a big Phillips fan but at least the 3-4 defense will not change for the players.

All Jerry Jones has to do is make a power move on "Moore" and take him away from the chargers or make a sweet deal for "Al Sanders" and the Cowboys go 13-3 or 14-2 and with Wade Blasting away with that defense lights out AFC.

once again fred ill give you the perfect reason

everyone knows Jerry wants Garrett to be the future coach of the Cowboys.....and this move may just shoot them in the foot

doesnt matter if they do well or not, it may not be good for the Cowboys

if the Cowboys lose then it sure wasnt the right move........if they win and the offense does real well other teams may look at Garrett as their Head Coach and Jerry cant do anything to stop them

I can accept that but for these two owners (Mr. Al Davis and Mr. Jerry Jones.) It's now or never and for any real "CowBoy Fan" not to respect what he's trying To give them would be "Uncivilized'.
Remember One of the OL'Boys Friends "Mr. Lamar Hunt" has just Passed Away from us"Bless his Soul" So these two O.G.s or going to let both barrels go for now on

I tell you what We can Pull Together and make a switch I'll give up Herman Edwards for Wade right now If i could .
I'm personaly tired of Guys getting In the way of coaches like wade playing not To lose .
I'm ready forget that we should be ready for some serious head coaches To Start showing there Peers and fans why there name should be mentioned with the likes of "Lambardi and the rest of the Greats".
All "Wade" has to do Is get a proven cordinator on offense and stick with the Defense and ride the Cowboys strait to the Hall Of Fame".

Cool Re: Wade Phillips New Cowboys Coach

Interesting. It looks like the Chargers really loved Phillips.
Quote:
Outside linebacker Shaun Phillips, who had a breakout season with 11 1-2 sacks in 2006, was sad to see Phillips go.

“Of course I’m upset because coach Wade brought the best out of us,” Shaun Phillips said. “It hurts to see him leave. Not only is he a great coach, but he was a great man to look up to.”

Wade Phillips, the son of former NFL head coach Bum Phillips, was hired
“I wouldn’t want to play for any other defensive coordinator,” Shaun Phillips said. “But unfortunately this is the NFL and transactions happen. We’ve got to move forward.”
