Cool Dorsett or Emmitt?

You can't go wrong either way but I'd rather have Dorsett on my team.

Re: Dorsett or Emmitt?

No way. Putting aside the numbers and records and everything else... I once saw Emmitt beat the Giants with one arm. Just single-handedly (literally, I guess) beat New York with an injured shoulder. I believe it was a Thanksgiving game. That performance right there told me all I needed to know about what kind of RB Emmitt Smith was. No knock on Dorsett, because he was great too, but give me Emmitt hands-down.

Different runners all together...I take my chances with Emmitt inside if I have a good line opening up lanes...I'd take Dorsett if I have a crappy line and he has to bounce outside and create his own play...

Re: Dorsett or Emmitt?

I can tell you this much. Tony Dorsett was the greatest college running back that I have ever seen. He seemed to have eyes in the back of his head when he played for Pitt. He ran like he knew exactly where everybody was in the secondary on every play. They just could not catch him.

When I compare Tony to Emmitt, I have this college bias in me. Emmitt was tougher inside but Tony had no peer once he got in the open field. His straight ahead speed was the best that I have ever seen.

Cool Re: Dorsett or Emmitt?

Okay, but who was the 3rd best back in Cowboy History?

Calvin Hill, Walt Garrison, Don Perkins, Dan Reaves, Moose, Julius Jones, Duane Thomas, Hershal Walker, Preston Pearson, Robert Newhouse?....

I never saw a lot of those guys play but I'd take Herschel.

Walker had a few big years for them...but the best thing he did was get them a slew of players in a trade to build the dynast of the 90's...I loved Hill as a kid, but he often got hurt...Garrison was tough...saw him play with a broken collar bone in 1973 Championship Game...Perkins wastheir first great back.

Re: Dorsett or Emmitt?

Gotta be Perkins. The others are all great, but he's the third leading rusher in team history and a six-time Pro Bowler to boot. Plus he could play tailback or fullback, which is a nice added bonus.

Let me tell ya what Wikipedia has to say about him... nah, just kidding

Re: Dorsett or Emmitt?

I probably would go with Calvin Hill or Don Perkins. Newhouse was the back that the Steelers almost drafted but changed their mind and selected Franco Harris. Smart Move!

Hill had an awesome rookie year for them, was part of the Super Bowl win against Miami, and then had back to back 1,000 yard years (14 game schedule) in 1972, and 1973...he was a great back in the early 70's...He lost a rushing title to Green Bays John Brockington by a mere two yards in 1973 if memory serves...

Re: Dorsett or Emmitt?

Two different backs, two different styles, but the same heart. Emmitt in the New York game which gave the Cowboys homefield advantage in the playoffs and did it with only one arm, stands out most in my mind. How many players would actually play with that kind of pain, knowing they were already in the playoffs at least?

Tony Dorsett, amazing speed and vision. When he got into the open field it was nothing but magic.

I love both these guys.

But... there ...was.. another ...running back...
