Cool Best Dallas QB: Staubach or Aikman?

I got a freind who believes that any great team in Dallas began with the TroyAikman/Emmitt Smith are. How many of you would actually pick Troy Aikman over Roger Staubach as the best quarterback the Cowboys have ever had?

Wow... not sure I would, Gotham, but there's definitely a case to be made for Aikman.

I hear you Lefty...but those that look back over the years and see Roger with only two rings, might fail to see that it would have been four if he had not picked the same decade to play as the fabled Steelers.

There might have been an additional journey or two but they stumbled into the Vikings in 1973 in the Conference Finals without the use of Calvin Hill and with Walt Garrison playing with a broken collar bone. Then the man takes them there in 1975 as wild card team with Newhouse as the main halfback, having ressurected the shotgun.

Aikman for all his glory had Smith and Irvin for the whole decade. Though I would say that Staubach was usually surrounded by a better defense...Still, my vote is for Roger the Dodger, Captain Comeback, who also bowed out with a few passing titles in his wake.

And who had more Hall of Famers playing around them? I bet in a few years, it'll be Aikman (if it isn't already). I think the key is that Staubach played a greater role in his teams' successes than Aikman did in his teams.

They sure as heck didn't become America's Team on Aikman's watch

Re: Best Dallas QB: Staubach or Aikman?

I don't know if Staubach could have survived in this new era of football. Aikman didn't have all the flashy numbers, but he won. He put the football in places only few in history could have. That's talent.

Roger was an awesome speciman to watch simply for his never-say-die mentality on the football field. He certainly proved to be one of the greats of all time. Comparing him to Aikman is like apples and oranges. Pick your flavor, you really can't go wrong.

Now, take that Roger prowess, mix it with Troy's accuracy and voila= Staikman-the greatest quarterback never to have lived.

Staubach had a winners mentality, he was atheletic and a born leader....three things that would have made him survive in any decade...andthe guy went of against some great defenses in those days...as good as Aikman was who really was around to challange the Cowboys of the early to mid 90's?

Re: Best Dallas QB: Staubach or Aikman?

Staubach was a bigger, stronger version of Doug Flutie. He would absolutely thrive if he was playing today, beleive me. I was a Vikings fan, enough said about what he did to me.
