Hiring Parcells was a mistake

This will not be a popular opinion, but I truly believe Parcells has hurt this team. Other than a great draft last year (at least to this point), what has he really built? Does anyone really believe this is a Super Bowl team?

Yet, we have messed around with the QB position for three years; and we have a thirty something and two untested young guns to show for it. We have switched defensive schemes and in the process made two of our best d-linemen into role-players (and now cap casualty). Meanwhile, we have two thirtysomething receivers, a superstar tight end that we can't seem to get the ball to for some reason, and a running back whose confidence seems shot by a coach who keeps needling him.

1990 was a long time ago, and the game has changed; Parcells, however, has not.

Cool Re: Hiring Parcells was a mistake

Hi Srs31043 and welcome to Go Teams Go. Although its voodoo to ever criticize Parcells - I think you hit the nail on the head.

That first year of success he had with the Cowboys was misleading. It was against an easy schedule and the team over-achieved. So instead of making the necessary changes he waited too long and now he's had 2 lousy years.

In Parcells's last 6 years of coaching. He's won a grand total of 1 playoff game - that one with the Jets. If he would just stay in one place and stop being the Larry Brown of the NFL, he might have more championships.

Yeah, Parcells hasn't had much success with the team, but then again, it would be hard to with a team like the Cowboys. Think about the records of the football teams of the past. The last three years, Dave Campo went 5-11 with them. Parcells has definitely done a better job than other coaches.

Re: Hiring Parcells was a mistake

While the season before last was wretched at best. Last year proved that the boys are on the verge. Think about it. Just a handful of key plays here or there and this would never be a question. Parcells can't coach and play at the same time. I feel he WAS conservative on some of his play calling which seemed to hurt. But again, he can't be out on the field blocking, catching, passing, running, or running pass routes. At some point, the players themselves have to be held accountable. And last year was a very good year in the draft. Everyone wants the miracle that was the early nineties Cowboys. That's not likely to ever happen again. It took Tom Landry Ten years to win a title, and he revolutionized the way teams played football, especially defense.

Re: Hiring Parcells was a mistake

Like any other coach, the man is only a "genius" when he is winning...and an "over-rated mistake" when he falls short...Heck give me Aikman, Smith and Irvin and a decent defense, and I might be the next great coach as well...Sure the guy's ego is the size of Texas...and yeah, some things in the game have changed, but before knocknig the guy, who's the better solution?

Re: Hiring Parcells was a mistake

There were coaches who inherited those three talents but did NOT succeed. The problem was the took it for granted and did not continue to instill teal unity which great coaches are famous for.
