Nguyen Could Retire

This was a bit of a shock. According to Mac Engel of Star-Telegram.com says that LB Dat Nguyen is set to retire.

"Asked if he might play again, Nguyen smiled and shook his head," Engel writes in a February 16 story. "He didn't answer the question. It appears only a formal announcement of Nguyen's retirement is missing."

Injuries limited him to just eight games and 31 tackles last season, and at 5-11 and around 240 pounds, you knew he couldn't take the physical demands of the linebacker position forever. If he does retired, he'll finish his career with 516 tackles, 6 sacks and 7 INTs in 7 seasons.

Thumbs up

I wasn't aware they took folks that small in the NFL anymore. Seriously, LB's a tough position unless you're built like a refrigerator, but Nguyen seems to have done pretty good with what he had. Only 7 years though -- hopefully he's got a lot of money socked away. I've always found it sad when guys younger than me have to retire for physical reasons, but then, sports can be hard on ya.

Dat's a Cowboy

Whether Dat Nguyen retires or not, one cannot look back at his career and say he didn't give it his all on every play. From the time the ball was snapped to the time the play ended, Dat played football. Played it with passion, to be precise. Dat's speed and quickness made up for any height difference, although 5'11" is hardly small. Dat's heart and determination is what has kept him on the football field, and appears injuries will now keep him off. Retirement or not, Dat's a Cowboy!
