Re: Terrell Owens Suicide Attempt Overdose

Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens reportedly tried to kill himself by overdosing on pain medication, even putting two more pills into his mouth after a friend intervened.

A Dallas police report released Wednesday morning said Owens told his friend "that he was depressed." Details of the report were first released by WFAA-TV.

The friend, who is not identified in the report, "noticed that (his) prescription pain medication was empty and observed (Owens) putting two pills in his mouth," the police report said.

The friend attempted to pry them out with her fingers, then was told by Owens that before this incident he'd taken only five of the 40 pain pills in the bottle he'd emptied. Owens was asked by rescue workers "if he was attempting to harm himself, at which time (he) stated, `Yes.'"

Owens was hospitalized late Tuesday because of what his publicist said was an allergic reaction to pain medicine he was taking for a broken hand. Doctors reportedly tried to induce vomiting.

Owens is recovering from a broken right hand he hurt a week ago Sunday. He had an operation the next day to have a plate screwed in, enabling the bone to heal without being further injured. Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said last week that the pain medicine made Owens ill.

The Cowboys were off this past weekend and Owens was back at practice Tuesday, although he worked out on his own. Parcells said Owens' hand was improving and he was expected back on the practice field Wednesday. Owens chatted briefly with reporters in the locker room Tuesday afternoon and seemed fine.

Owens, one of the league's top receivers during his 11-year NFL career, is best known for wild stunts on the field and other publicity-seeking antics off it.

When the Cowboys signed him to a $25 million, three-year deal in March, they said their background checks indicated no red flags. In fact, team consultant Calvin Hill — who mostly deals with troubled players — said during training camp that his department was not involved with Owens because he didn't have a history of those kinds of problems.

Dallas police officials said they were planning a news conference later Monday, but did not immediately release a time. A hospital spokeswoman said early Wednesday there was no patient registered as Terrell Owens, although federal privacy laws allow people to block their name from being released.

Owens' publicist and agent, and the Cowboys, did not return repeated calls from The Associated Press. No teammates or Cowboys officials were seen entering the hospital late Tuesday night.

Re: Terrell Owens Suicide Attempt Overdose

Conflicting reports about exactly what happened last night.

On one hand, his publicist is saying that he was allergic to the pain medication, with coach Bill Parcells saying that he expected T.O. to rejoin his teammates at practice Wednesday and would start Sunday in Tennessee if he proves he can play.

But there is a police report on the AP wire, first released by WFAA-TV in Dallas, that Owens did indeed try to commit suicide, that his bottle of painkillers was completely empty and that he had even stuffed two more pills into his mouth after help arrived.

Sure wish this whole situation would start to become a little clearer...

T.O.'s mental state has long and often been questioned, but it seemed like things were going better for him. He's the kind of guy football fans love to hate, but nobody, I hope, would wish him this kind of ill.

Re: Terrell Owens Suicide Attempt Overdose

ESPN2's Cold Pizza just interviewed the reporter from WFAA-TV who broke the story - she said that the woman who discovered T.O. had been "depressed" in recent days, and that Owens admitted to police that he had ingested 35 of the 40 painkiller pills that were in the bottle last night. He admitted that he had intended to cause harm to himself. Apparently, a press conference - I believe called by the Cowboys - is scheduled for later today.

Cowboys have scheduled a 2:30 press conference, and Dallas police officers are also supposed to hold a Q&A session at some point Wednesday. Furthermore, its been learned that Owens did have his stomach pumped last night.

Sounds like he might be a bit bi-polar...given his up and down swings...

Or maybe he did react funny to the meds and it sent him into a depresssion...

Who knows...

I like the guy...and risked a 3rd round pick in two leagues on him...in the 3rd league I took the equally problematic Rany Moss...

Bizarre. The guy has some serious, serious, serious mental issues. He’s about as emotionally stable as a 13-year-old girl.

You know, that's a really good point, Gotham. Lots of medications are known to cause depression in people including, in kids at least, many ADHD medications and even some depression meds! Anyone know what painkiller he was on and what the possible side effects were?

I am not even going to try to begin what is in this guy's head, but this is just incredulous. Then again, I never understood celebrities who seem to have it all ending up trying to (or actually succeeding in) killing themselves.

Then again, this whole thing could end up being a publicity stunt. A very, very bad publicity stunt if it turns out to be the case.

Terrel Owens Ruins Another NFL Franchise
The Dallas Cowboys are the latest victims in TO’s quest to ruin every NFL Team before the end of his career. After so much pre season speculation and drama that failed to completely distract the Cowboys, TO made a desperate attempt to keep everyone “focused on ME” by attempting suicide.

Sadly what comes to mind is how media hungry and desperate for attention this guy always is. If by some sick way this was all for attention – than he needs help more than any of us could ever imagine.

Either way he doesn’t need to be anywhere near a football field, because the game is secondary to his health right now. This man is in serious need of some help and hopefully the NFL and Dallas Cowboys take the necessary arrangements to get him that support.

We got a guy with a history of allergic reactions to pain medication, who probably doesn't know where he is, answering "yes" to every question asked of him. We've got some unidentified person claiming she knows what's going on ( I wouldn't be surprised if Owens' pills are now making the rounds on the black market), amazingly no one has asked the simple question, "Terrell, did you try to kill yourself?"; and we've got every newspaper in America either reporting Owens attempted suicide or reporting that others have reported Owens' attempted suicide.

Come on now! The facts just aren't there, why are newspapers reporting as if they were? These are pretty serious accusations. It is irresponsible to just toss them around. The media really needs to do its job!

We don't know how long Owens has been struggling with depression, and now we have to wonder if and how it's connected with the behavior that drove him out of San Francisco and Philadelphia. Either way, I hope he gets the help he needs.

The guy who for such a long time has been obnoxious to all of us now has finally become obnoxious even to himself! Apparently he has looked into the mirror and seen what we see: a loud-mouthed, egoistic, extremely over-compensated individual who is, in truth, a jerk. Since he has always thought that he was a big deal (why not... he's all the sportscasters can talk about since he single-handedly screwed the Philadelphia Eagles season last year), something must've happened to give this zero a rush of reality. His recently broken hand? Bill Parcells not too politely remind him that football is a team sport? Three straight days without his name in a headline somewhere? The poor SOB...

Unfortunately, and sadly, this is not something from which one can easily hide, nor rebound anytime soon. Without being privy to the specific details -- these will emerge as the day goes on -- chances are that good will ultimately come from this.

Mr. Owens will finally get the mental health counseling his past behavior and actions have long demanded. In terms of career preservation, time will only tell.

I am probably NOT the best one to be writing this, especially if you’re looking for ANY sympathy, you see, I hate the Dallas Cowboys and I think Terrell Owens is a trouble maker and and ‘attention whore’…

Someone intent on committing suicide is the person who’s remains are found, plain and simple, and ANYTHING less is a cry for help or attention…

Despite being a Cowboys fan, I was not too pleased when our acquisition of T.O. was announced last year. I felt that we were paying an exuberant amount for a talented yet troubled player, and drama was definitely not what Dallas needed. Was it all worth it?...

...He has to respect the fans who helped put him where he is. Somewhere he lost his sight and I do believe he is going the Ricky Williams way: CFL anyone?

But no matter why he did it, if he did indeed do it, it's sad and a clear sign that Terrell needs a lot of help. A lot of times we look at athletes -- especially one as physically sculpted as TO -- and assume that their life off the field is as perfect as the bodies they work so hard on.

That's not always the case.

Re: Terrell Owens Suicide Attempt Overdose

We all like to joke about Terrell Owens but this is nothing to joke about. This man needs the proper medication and psychiatric help before he can put in a situation to harm himself let alone play for the NFL. They used to keep suicide attempts for a year in psychiatric hospitals and I think some months in one would benefit Owens. He made a life for himself that he clearly can no longer handle and if I were him id hang up the cleats for good and work on saving my life and making it one worth saving.

That's jumping the gun my concern friend...

The story is not clear. Neither is the cause...if he had a reaction to the meds...its a diff. story...he wasn't in the right frame of mine.

I like to think TO is too much about TO to really have made a decision with out the affects of meds.

Hanging up the cleats can also spiral him into a post career depression and it might be worse.
