| Jackets ink Umberger The Blue Jackets today signed R.J. Umberger to a four-year, $15 million contract.
The franchise acquired the versatile forward June 20 in a draft-day trade with the Philadelphia Flyers. The former Ohio State product led the Flyers with 10 goals in the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs, helping them reach the Eastern Conference finals.
The deal calls for Umberger to earn $3 million this season, $3.5 million the next, $4 million in 2010-11 and $4.5 million in the final year of the contract.
Umberger, 26, likely will center a first line next season with Rick Nash. Umberger has played three NHL seasons, registering 49 goals and 67 assists.
Umberger is one of two Jackets' restricted free agents general manager Scott Howson is dealing with this summer. The franchise must also re-sign goaltender Pascal Leclaire. |
