The Blue Jackets today named Rick Nash their fifth captain in franchise history.

Nash, 23, was introduced at a noon news conference and modeled a Blue Jackets' jersey with the "C" sewn on it. The team also announced it will elevate Michael Peca to the role of alternate captain.
Fans will get their first opportunity to see Nash as captain on Friday night at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.
"I’m not going to be a magic captain," Nash said. "I’m not going to step in and guarantee anything. ... The biggest plus is I’m going to be here for a long time and be the captain for a long time."
Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said Nash will be getting a "baptism by fire" as the team tries frantically to make up ground in the race for the final playoff spot. Columbus is seven points out of the final spot with 12 games remaining.
Hitchcock had planned to play out the balance of the schedule without a captain following the Feb. 26 trade of Adam Foote to Colorado. But after Nash met with Hitchcock over the weekend and general manager Scott Howson on Tuesday, the coach and GM decided it was the right time to give Nash the captaincy.
Nash follows Lyle Odelein, Luke Richardson, Ray Whitney and Foote in wearing the "C." He leads the team with 35 goals and 58 points.
