It was accidental...though...yeah...scalp...I am soooo not a PC person...I hate all the squabble over team names etc... I mean where does it all stop?...the Oiler's name will be banned to please an environmental group?...Canuck is somewhat considered offensive...do people in Tampa Bay want to distance themselves from the Lightning, cause they really are the lightning captial of the world (second place I think?), and they don't want the bad press?...where does the madness stop?...

Is TB really the lightning capital of the world (or second lightning capital)?
I take no offense to Canucks, myself. I also think Edmontonians pray to the God of Oil, so would never take offense to the moniker.
A little off topic here - My husband, who finds the Cleveland Indians symbol offensive, brought up the point, why is the NBA the only league to remain offensive-less when it comes to team names?
Redskins. Indians. Braves w/ their tomahawk salute. Blackhawks (because it takes an entire culture and turns it into a team name). No NBA team name we could come up with.

I am sure if your husband presents Cleveland with a suitable substitute to their logo...one that makes them a lot more money, they would consider switching...As for the Indian name, it is said to have been in honor of a Native American named Sockalexis who played in Cleveland pre 1900...so it was done with good intentions...The one thing no one ever talks about is monetary compensation for losses that a team would take if they switched a logo they have had a trade mark on since the turn of the century...

As for Tampa Bay, yes more lightning strikes than any where else except somewhere out west in Arizona I believe...for a long time, Tampa was an excellent place to have a TV repair shop.

I learn every day on Goteamsgo.
It would be way too expensive to change a decades long held logo, i know - but I'm not so much talking about saying 'Cleveland Indians' (although the term Indian is outdated) - it's the smiling red faced man that seems to hit a bit of a squashy spot in tasteful.

Wow have the jackets gotten that bad that now we're debating the PC of sports logos!! LOL! If people are offended by Indians then how come Northern US residents aren't offended by Yankee?? Is it cause one team wins and another ..oh not so much? Or is it that we are all trying a little too hard not to hurt anyones feelings? If that's the case then we need to change the Blue Jackets name as to not offend our friends to the south in those former "Confederate" states. Just cause they won the war does that make using the name ok?? hmmmmmmm.....

Well, talk about shutting that conversation down.
Guess we got a bit off topic.
one last note - I think they are allowed to call themselves the Yankees because to the winner go the spoils, and the right to use the name. although there has got to be a rebs team out there somewhere.
ps. indian is pejorative, no question about that. which isn't to say, I'm not a cleveland fan. I've liked them a long time.

You are absolutely right...the Red Man has nothing to be smiling about...for politically correct reasons he should be shedding a tear, but the logo just wouldn't catch on...you know?

Lol well as amusing as these posts have been, it would probably be a great topic to start somewhere on GoTeamsGo, a lot of people have strong opinions on this stuff. Anyway heres not only hoping to good health but some wins to make these players feel good about something
