The
Rockies may not be confident about keeping
Matt Holliday in Colorado for the rest of his career, but they did the next best thing by securing him through his arbitration years. He signed a two-year, $23 million deal on Friday, which includes $9.5 million this year and $13.5 million next.
Will these next two seasons be his last at Coors Field? Unless the Monfort brothers deviate from their position of never handing out another contract of $100 million or more, it seems likely. But
Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post thinks Holliday might be worth the risk:
It's one thing to recklessly roll the dice. It's another to make a long-term investment, even one that stretches your budget to the breaking point, if it makes sense to do it. And signing Holliday makes all the sense in the world.
Yes,
[Todd] Helton's contract has proven to be a disaster. But he'll fall off the books after the 2011 season. Given the financial windfall that figures to follow their Rocktober run, the Rockies could pay them both for the next few years.
