Todd Helton has the ability to opt out of his contract today (the deadline to do so is today) like JD Drew did with the Dodgers last week. However, as the Denver Post reasons, he would be tossing away $71 Million in guaranteed money away. There's no chance of that going down.

Helton had a bad season (for him anyway) last year and I expect him to rebound next year.

But I do wonder what his season #s would be if he didn't play 81 games at Coors.

Yeah, Helton would be a fool to leave $71 million and the cozy confines of Coors Field. There are those who say his numbers would be marginal at best elsewhere, and they could well be right.

I don't see why he deserves $71M but I guess the Rockies want to hold onto him for future years. $71M is a lot of money these days, considering most people make anywhere from $30,000 to $250,000 a year. Plus, none of these players ever contribute to an online sports forum like the incredible, GoTeamsGo.Com

Well, this deal was negotiated at the time when all contracts were out of whack. I think his complete contract was something like $100+ Million for 7-years.

Plus, he signed this deal before the league clamped down on steroids.
