Mountain West seeks automatic BCS berth

The nine-team Mountain West Conference is pushing for an automatic berth into the high-stakes, big-money BCS bowl mix, USA Today has reported.

Three teams in the conference, including undefeated Utah in sixth, TCU in 11th and BYU in 16th, finished among the top 25 in the final 2008 BCS standings, and the league's schools will press for a meeting of their presidents, chancellors and Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson with Atlantic Coast commissioner and current BCS coordinator John Swofford, according to the newspaper.
"The argument I will hear back is, 'Craig, here it is. It's done. It's been agreed to. It's signed,' " Thompson said of a possible reply from the BCS regarding its legal obligations. "That doesn't mean you can't put it on the table.
"One of the options would be to visit with the BCS coordinator ... just to lay out our position."
He adds: "I would not be optimistic. As I explained to them [the Mountain West presidents], it's a series of legal contracts among 11 conferences, four bowls, two TV partners with yet another TV partner coming in. I would not see much of a relaxation."
The BCS bowl games' payout for each team's school is $17 million -- more than five times what teams in second-tier bowls garner.

Re: Mountain West seeks automatic BCS berth

I think the MWC should get the bid....it's been a better conference than the Big East most years and was probably better than the Big 10 also this year. I do think they should be forced to expand to either 10 or 12 teams to qualify for a BCS berth, also feel the Big East should be forced to expand to 10 or 12 teams as well.

Boise State should be part of the MWC for them to get that bid...and maybe add 2 more teams from this group;Fresno State, UTEP, or Houston.

Big East could add East Carolina and maybe Tulsa, Southern Miss, Troy...and ideally....Notre Dame.

Notre Dame won't go to the Big East in football... they don't want to lose their automatic bid they have.

I know this is true in the present, but I think eventually Notre Dame may be forced to join a conference or risk being left out. The Big Ten also has room for one more team...Notre Dame is the perfect fit there.

You have a point. The BCS idiots eventually probably would force them to join a conference.

Re: Mountain West seeks automatic BCS berth

The BCS will probably schedule harder games for Utah this upcoming season. So they can see if they really deserve to play in the BCS Championship.

I think they should too, are you telling me that, 1-3 the MWC was worst than the ACC or Big East.

Utah/BYU/TCU vs. Cinncinati/West Virginia/Pittsburgh vs. Georgia Tech/Virgina Tech/Florida State

I would take the Mountain West. If them the bid

Re: Mountain West seeks automatic BCS berth

Finally, I live near SDSU who are in the Mountain West and I have a friend(Darryl Mack) who played for the undefeated Utah team that got screwed over last year by the BCS formula.

It looks as if the selection process isn't going to change anytime soon so at the very least this should insure that if another Mountain West team goes undefeated that maybe they'll have a fair shot at competing for the National title, which is how it should be.
