Recruiting Practices on MySpace

Recently, MySpace has made it pretty big in the news. From the school shootings that were averted when officials found a post about planning it on MySpace to what now appears to be college coaches recruiting through MySpace. In The Bivings Report, a report was posted about Texas A & M football coach, Coach Malone, having a profile to improve upon the recruiting in the program.

Now my question is this: is this an invasion of everyone's right to talk to their friends online? Is this taking recruiting too far or is it completely justified and within the coaches' rights to do the best job recruiting no matter what?

What do you mean about invasion of the right to talk to freinds? That's a right?

As far as coaches having online profiles on well known social sites, I don't see a problem. It gives pub to schools and their programs and as long as they don't break any recruiting rules, I see no problem.

Re: Recruiting Practices on MySpace

I've heard a lot of people/companies are using MySpace as an advertising opportunity like this. I mean, when you come down to it, everybody is "advertising" something with their MySpace page. Teenage girls are doing it to "advertise" that they're part of the cool crowd. Middle aged divorcees are advertising themselves to the opposite sex...

It's all in the public eye. I think there's nothing wrong with it.

I don't know a lot about MySpace. If he has a page, I would think that it'd be no different than any other page. But I believe places like MySpace are for chatting and making personal contact; that I believe the NCAA should crack down on. Phone calls are limited, right? So should emails, personal messages and the like, otherwise computer-saavy coaches will have an unfair advantage.

I agree with Ross. there shouldn't be a problem with coaches trying to recruit on Myspace. It would save them some "legwork" in going to various places, save the colleges some money in non-productive travel, and allow the coaches to "connect" with potential recruits. I have no problem with that.
