Re: coaches poll I find it interesting the Oklahoma has 13 first place votes and are #5 overall. That is the 2nd most first place votes in the poll, USC recieved only one 1st place vote and are ranked #3. Apparantly some coaches must have waited to the last minute before casting their ballots.

Re: coaches poll I always wonder what the criteria is for the coaches when they are compiling rankings. Is the #1 team the most likely to get to the national title game or simply the best team. Because strength of schedule is almost as important as the strength of the actual team. For instance, if I was to rank the teams most likely to participate in the national title game, I would have WVU at 1, followed by OSU, USC, Miami and Notre Dame. But if I was ranking the best teams, 1-5 would look something like this: Auburn, OSU, LSU, Miami, Florida. I assume they are just ranking who they believe to be the superior teams, and not placing odds on pending success. Although Steve Spurrier ranks Duke at #25 at the beginning of every season, so obviously their motives are not always consistent.

Re: coaches poll The Coaches are smarter than the fans and sport columnist. They know what it takes to make it to the top. The also talk to each other. They know what schools are loaded with hidden talent. Do you think Ohio State is worried that that lost nine starters to th NFL Draft (Five first round Picks) and have only two returning starters on Defense.....? Why are they Number One in the coaches poll? Don't be surprised by the 5Th or 6th game of the season OSU's defense will be ranked among the best in the country.
