Re: Should the NCAA limit athletic donations?

Hot on the heels of a $165 million dollar gift from billionaire Boone Pickens to the Oklahoma State University, the NCAA is considering placing a limit on donations that a school's athletic department can receive. Something about how a team could actually hurt the university's academic program if they start losing, causing a school to take money from elsewhere to pay off bonds or whatnot. I don't quite get it 100% myself. How could a donation be a bad thing?

PHP Code:
How could a donation be a bad thing
There are some instances in which donations are completely egregious. Recently someone donated around half a billion dollars to Harvard, a school that has a greater net worth than forty some countries around the world. Clearly this is a situation where that money could be better spent.
But in situations like the one you described at Oklahoma State in which the donation is specifically for the athletic department ... the only explanation the NCAA could have is a donation of this magnitude makes Title IX advocates insecure.

Re: Should the NCAA limit athletic donations?

this is how i looked at the story

your school got a $100 million donation, ours got a $25 million donation, you can afford better stuff then we can. we need to cap the donations at $25 million

your gym is nicer
your team dorms are nicer
your cafeteria team food is more nutritious
yadda yadda yadda

problem i see is, no matter how poor you are, there is always someone poorer
