Greatest Players of All Time

Rivals.com is doing an interesting fan poll to elect the greatest NCAA college football players of all time. The first semifinals results can be found at Greatest Player Polls: Semifinal 1 Results - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports and the voting page is over at Rivals.com College Football - Rivals.com Greatest Players. What do you think about this idea, as well as the results thus far?

Archie Manning, Bo Jackson and Jim Brown are in a league of their own...or so it would seem...

Interesting vote. I know the sacrifice Pat Tillman made for his country, but as a football player he was not in the same class as Mike Haynes. Griese/Woodson at Purdue was closer than it should have been. How about Major Harris ousting Sam Huff at West Virginia-oh my God! And at Florida, Danny Wuerrfel couldn't carry Steve Spurrier's jock.

Yeah... I know...I was thinking the same thing on Tillman...It being fourth of July weekend... I didn't say it...Though I don't knwo how he iddi in college compare to Haynes...in the pros it would be Haynes by landslide.

Am I the only one who find this sad?
Recent players dominate Greatest Players winners - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports

According to this, 41 of 66 winners ended their careers after 1980. Among some of the biggest surprises: Rocket Ishmael over George Gipp; Tony Gonzalez over Chuck Muncie; Vince Young over Earl Campbell; Dick Butkus over Red Grange; Michael Vick over Bruce Smith. Thoughts?

Where is Harris at? last I heard he was in canda. Seems to me he got nowhere after he left WVU. He could play ,but the golden boy treatment he got from the Couch screwed the whole season. I don't get his being voted over Amos. If I sound a little bitter its because I am. I didn' like Neilan(don't think I spelled that right) I feel he cost WVU many a game and I never understood all the praise he received. I've wanted too say that for years, now I feel better.

No suprise there...the younger generation dominated the voting I would say...and if it was done on line...I can see how it would come out that way.

Cool Re: Greatest Players of All Time

Vince Young beat Earl Campbell? I don't think so. Michael Irvin? Vinnie Testeverde was better than Irvin in my opinion.

Young is still fresh in people's mind and they did take a National Championship...Campbell roamed long ago and far away...besides I always thought Campbell was at his best in the Pros.

Re: Greatest Players of All Time

My vote for the greatest college football player of all time would be Steve Young from BYU. I can't quote any stats at this time, but thats my feeling.

Young started his BYU career as the 8th string quarterback...his final stats included...908 pass attempts, 592 completes, 7,733 yards, 56 TD and over 1,000 yard rushing.

Re: Greatest Players of All Time

I have to say that Vince Young deserves his spot by an inch over Campbell due to the fact that Young won the national championship. Campbell was great in every sense of the word, but as a collegian, so was Vince Young. As a pro, Young has a long way to go to oust Campbell who I believe was one of the 5 best NFL RBs of all time.

Agree...One of the top 5 huh?...Having seen him wreck havoc in the NFL in the late 70's and early 80's I got to agree... I got Jim Brown and Sanders ahead of him...Gale Sayers, O.J., Emmitt and Payton about evens up...and as a powerback...maybe Csonka as his equal...but that's about it.

Re: Greatest Players of All Time

If I had to pick the best college player of all time, I would have to go with Tony Dorsett. Not too shabby a pro either.
