Despite protests, beer ads wont be banned

In spite of strong protests from all corners of the sports and non sports world, the NCAA says beer ads will continue to pay for college sports telecasts.
The NCAA executive committee says that even though they believe this type of advertising is appropriate for college sports, it was tried once before in this country and it didn't work.
The NCAA also said that college fantasy leagues could be the next big moneymaker.

ESPN - Despite calls for ban, NCAA says it can't stop beer ads, fantasy sports - College Sports

This seems to be incredible to me. I see all the college athletes in trouble because of drinking. It would seem to be simple to see that this is a really bad idea. But--it has to be paid for doesnt it? Add the fact that the NCAA says it was tried before and it didnt work and guess who has to share the blame for this inability to take alcohol ads out of the mix? Why none other than John Q. Public.
Agree or disagree?

Re: Despite protests, beer ads wont be banned

Prohibition of common and accepted parts of culture just doesn't work. The NCAA is right to not waste their resources trying to stop it.

While several student athletes may have gotten in trouble for alcohol recently, and personally i only know of the ND story, that still has to do with our culture. Banning ads won't make student athletes not drink. Furthermore, if most of these situations are like the one at ND, then nothing happened other than paparazzi BS.

Making alcohol a right of passage has caused untold alcohol problems in this country. The part of our culture that needs to change is how we deal with responsibility and blame. Unfortunately, as a whole, we tend to place blame far more than take responsibility.

Could you clarify that a little please? i'm not sure who you are responding to. It sounds like you are asking if the NCAA believes the beer ads are inappropriate. i think that the NCAA does, in fact, believe them to be inappropriate, but also believes that trying to ban the ads will be a costly and losing fight.

Re: Despite protests, beer ads wont be banned

I don't think beer ads are a huge deal. The biggest problem would be the students drinking too much I assume. Hopefully a lot of them are going to the games. Maybe the TV audience overall is a little more adult? They can't advertise AT the game or sell during it, right? That seems like enough banning of it to me.

dannan14 and bucky889 you both make some good points.
It just wont work to try to ban the ads because it is a lost cause.
And banning them isnt going to stop the kids from drinking. And bucky is right, they cant sell or advertise during games. In fact at championship games, if there are any alcohol ads in the stadium, they are covered.
