In other conferences, small quarterbacks aren't highly recruited outof high school. But not in the Big 12.
Nebraska's Joe Ganz is 6-1, 210 lbs. and says hopefully coaches will realize you don't have to be 6-4, 230 lbs. to have success in college.
Prevalence of the spread offence in the Big 12 has made a difference. The conference used to be about power and if the quarterback wasn't tall he'd have a hard time seeing over the defensive line to find receivers. But the spread opened things up. By lining up players along the line of scrimmage, quarterbacks have more lanes open to throw. Add in the roll outs and swing passes that are a part of the spread, and its easy to see why smaller quarterbacks have thrived in the system.
