Can a non-BCS Conference team win it all?

Can a non-BCS Conference team win it all?

That's the title of a recent Rivals.com article suggests it is possible if...

1. They go undefeated
2. Other teams in the conference have good seasons
3. They beat a couple of teams from BCS conferences
4. No more than one BCS conference team goes undefeated

The above criteria would get them voted into the BCS title game, which of course, they would then have to win.

The question is, do you think this is possible? And even if a team meets all these caveats, are they necessarily a lock to play for the title, or could they still get bumped by a one-loss SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, ACC or Big East team? What do you think?

Re: Can a non-BCS Conference team win it all?

No, I don't see this ever happening but great topic Lefty. Boise St, from the WAC, was the best chance of this happening two years ago but the BCS computers along with Harris and USA/Coaches polls clearly kept them out of the top 5 despite being undefeated. I am all for a non BCS team winning it all but only in a playoff system which the Presidents of the NCAA still don't have enough intelligence to pass.

Yeah, definitely not right now. And for them to have a shot, they definitely have to fulfill the criteria in the first post.

I would love to see them matched up against ALABAMA for the titleshot! That would be "Old School" at its finest and would bring unbelievable ratings for both television and radio.

unfortunately, this will not happen for all the right pieces must fall together. that can actually happen, but what happens then is politics get involved and it turns into the ole debate over money.

That would probably all work if it wasn't for 4. The BCS conference team would have priority (in the minds of many) over the non BCS team. A one loss SEC team would probably have priority over them too, but mainly because of the last 2 or 3 years and reputation and all that......

There is no way it happens this year, I don't even think a non-BCS conference team makes it this year. If anyone has a chance it's BYU, but I really don't see.

Re: Can a non-BCS Conference team win it all?

I saw this same question on Rivals.com And the first sentence read Perfection is not always good enough. In the 10 year span of the BCS 3 teams have gone undefeated and still didn't get a title shot. But of course none where Notre Dame.

Its a lot like Auburn the last time they went undefeated and didst get a title shot. The pre season rankings doomed them from the get go. They were not even ranked in pre season and all year they had an uphill battle and just ran out of time to get to No.1 or even No2.

Thats why I hate pre season rankings. They should wait until averything shakes out than have a ranking. Like maybe after the 3rd week. But certainly not before they even play a game. Its only good for fodder
