How Many QBs Translate to the NFL and become successful?

Every year we hear about some QB who is just the next guy to change the face of the NFL. It doesn't matter if the guy is a gunslinger or a dual threat run/pass or a pocket passer. We all hear about these guys so how many live up to the hype?

Seems like they've been doing pretty well lately. Vince Young, Ben Roethlesberger, Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers all have had some struggles but are doing pretty well for themelves. Matt Leinhart and JaMarcus Russell have some work to do. But then, I guess if you go back to the Kyle Bollers, J.P. Losmans and Joey Harringtons of the world, there have been a fair share of busts too. I'd say they probably hit on, oh, about 50% of them.

How about doing a modern era 1990-present of all the QBs who were drafted in the first round and let's see how many were worth the 1st roundpick. Then do another column that shows how many Qbs came from the later rounds to go on to be successful. {I know you hate homework} This would really give us an idea of just how important the 1st round picks are.

My guess is you will find more (quantity) successful guys that were not first round picks, but 1st round picks have a much better chance percentage wise to be successful. Obviously a 1st round pick doesn't guarantee you anything though, let us not forget Ryan Leaf.

I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else, but it does in my head.

Re: How Many QBs Translate to the NFL and become successful?

Great topic Stoney! I would agree with one of your member's replies that it is a 50-50 scenario here with newly drafted QB's. You have to remember, most of the best QB's get stuck with God awful NFL teams and really have to hope the owner will spend the money and bring in some talent to support their new QB which rarely happens. I actually have followed Joey Harrington's career since high school and know his father who was my high school teacher. Joey has played on the worst teams in the NFL but this is the only reason I would defend him. He has been a huge disappointment to me as well in games I felt he just collapsed.

Great points on Ryan Leaf, I am not sold on Phillip Rivers yet, I am not sold on Jay Cutler yet either and others who were highly drafted who either were busts are soon to be busts. Great exceptions would have to be Eli Manning and Carson Palmer. The current NFL QB's in the NFL are some of the worst I have ever seen since I have been following as a little boy in the early 1970's. You just never know?
