BCS reject 4 team playoff proposal

ACC commissioner John Swofford says college football will not change the way it determines its national championship as it starts negotiations for future tv contracts that will run thru 2014. He said the BCS was in an "unprecedented state of health."

Wow, talk about someone in a state of denial. Of course, as bad as we fans want a playoff, we're all smart enough to know it's not gonna happen.

Re: BCS reject 4 team playoff proposal

I know this is my thread but, uh, would someone please explain to me in Layman's terms (meaning simple) just exactly what this is about??

(For those of you who dont know, this is my first year into college sports and I have a lot to learn.)

The BCS (the current systems), uses a computer to decide who the two best teams are and matches them up. That may be oversimplify it but that is true.

You have got to be kidding me. What kind of a "healthy system" is that?

That does kind of oversimplify it. It's actually some complex mathematical formula that involves voter polls, computer ratings, and a bunch of other stuff (but not strength of schedule, IIRC). They do the math and spit out the top rated teams in college football, and people almost never agree with them.

It still doesnt sound like a healthy system to me. Actually, I remember my sister complaining about the system before. I just didnt pay enough attention to her.
So what is 4 team playoff deal? Why would that make it any better?
Of course people would never agree because everyone thinks their team is the best.
So we are stuck with this deal until 2014. Gotta tell you, I dont like it.

With the playoff you would still have the five BCS bowls, but they would designate two of them as "playoff game", and the winners would play each other for the title. The computer would still decide the four teams, but it would be better than the BCS.

Re: BCS reject 4 team playoff proposal

A four team playoff would be a slight improvement, but they need an absolute minimum of eight ideally.

I think they need a whole new system for determining playoffs and championships. But what do I know, I'm just a rookie.

Re: BCS reject 4 team playoff proposal

It would still be a lot better because the two teams playing for the title would have to earn their way into the final game. There would still be debate about the 5th seed being snubbed, but you will have that in any system. Every year for the basketball touney there are a few teams that think they should have gotten in with a 65 team seeding.
