Colt Brennan (Wrongly) Thinks He Lost Millions by Returning for Senior Season

The Washington Redskins took Colt Brennan with the 186th pick in last weekend's draft. He was the tenth quarterback selected, and although Brennan seemed like a potential franchise player last fall, he'll struggle to make the 53-man roster behind Jason Campbell and Todd Collins. So what happened? According to the Honolulu Advertiser, it was all about timing:
The former University of Hawai'i quarterback's decision to return for his senior season will cost him about $1,378,500 over a three-year period.

Brennan, who was projected to be a first- or second-round pick after the 2006 season, saw his value drop after a poor outing in the Sugar Bowl, an illness that caused his weight to drop to 185 at the Senior Bowl, and a recent hip surgery
Brennan confirms as much, and his college coach, June Jones, suggested that by returning for his senior season, Brennan was turning down $25 million.

He wasn't all that and Georgia showed it. The NFL is tougher than people think. The kid was not ready for prime time.

And had he come out as a junior, that game would've never happened, plus he wouldn't have suffered those injuries. So... maybe he's right.

Yeah, maybe he's right..... but had he went on to the NFL he probably would have sustained worse injuries and out of a job in the first year. I mean look how Georgia tore his a$$ up.

True, but he would've had all that guaranteed money. And who knows... with a better o-line, he may yet wind up being something in the pros.

Brennan is a sixth round pick, you can't compare him to David Carr because Carr was the top pick. The Redskins even called him a developmental project.

That is this year last year "When he was a hot commidity" he was supposed to have been a top five pick [which I highly doubted] Mel Kiper was comparing him to David Carr. We didn't know just how bad Carr was going to play at Carolina.

Of course he is right...how he does in the NFL is another matter...but he would have gone higher...no doubt there.

Well, New England landed a pretty good QB in the later rounds a few years ago. Now what was his name again...

I dont remember the guy's name either but I still think the early picks are overrated.
Brennan will make it up later. If he's still considered a developmental project, he would have been even more of one then. I only saw him in the one Bowl game last year and he did not impress me. He needed the extra time.
Besides, kid, you got your education didnt you?
(Silly me thinks going to college is about an education and not about getting ready for the pros)

Hey, in hindsight...I rather run the 40 in 4.3 than have the college education I got...

College is about preparing for your career, whatever it is. If Brennan was committed to being a professional athlete, then that winds up being more important than his degree. Of course, given his current situation, I bet he winds up happy that he has that degree in case he's a washout.

Guess I was thinking about guys like Robert Smith who only used the pros as a stepping stone to what he really wanted to do.
Besides, what is he gets a career ending injury in his second game? What does he do then. Sometimes an NFL career is pretty short. What do you do with the rest of your life then????????????
