What is it with crime lately?

I understand coaches giving a chance to a borderline kid but we are seeing more charges brought lately and for violent behavior not sneaking a beer. So what is it with all the crimes committed lately by college athletes?

Re: What is it with crime lately?

All of the above and maybe somehow the attitude has sifted down from the pros that athletes can away with more??
At least they think so.
Violence is on the rise in our society so guess it only follows it would find its way into the college level too.

Re: What is it with crime lately?

The pressure to win is such that some coaches are willing to take a chance. I think some coaches fear if they pass on a questionable kid someone else will take and later beat them on the field.

Not an excuse IMO.

I agree 100% - no excuse - but it happens all the time

Re: What is it with crime lately?

When I look at Pro Foootball players both past and present I see far too many instances of violent crime in the past 15 years. So do you believe it has anything to do with coaches not teaching ethics and morals? Where are the Bear Bryants that you don't want to disappoint? Why is it that coaches aren't like second fathers anymore [or first fathers in some cases] to these kids? Even kids with questionable backgrounds need to be held accountable in high school. What happened to making men out of boys? Isn't that what coaching is about in the first place? I can respect a coach who takes a stand and makes his team toe the line. Saban can be that coach and I am glad to see he responded quickly and yet he was fair to the young man at the same time. But this kids sense of entitlement didn't appear overnight. Surely his high school coaches knew something of his behaviors. The thug attitude won't cut it at Alabama Saban got a bellyfull of it last season. But what of coaches like Joe Pa? I thought it was an honor to get to play for a guy like that. When did the coaches lose the respect of and control of the players and teams?

Maybe when it became more important to win than anything else. Its in our society Stoney. When we start putting first things first in our lives, then it will be reflected in our athletics, pro and college. You are right though. Its a rare coach that stands up to the pressure to win and teaches his guys to toe that line.

let me add 2 more to the list

D. i believe more people may be reporting crimes then ever before .... years ago maybe if the star backs stole a keg of beer from the local liquor store the owner may have passed it off as boys being boys .... not so much anymore

E. such crimes are being prosecuted more and more imo .... the powers that be (cops and district attorneys) are no longer sweeping things under the rug

these two things may be a small percentage, but i do believe they happen to an extent to add to the feeling that more crime is happening

Could we be seeing the results of less Daddys in the homes? Fathers are supposed to be the ones teaching thier kids discipline not coaches or teachers or "Big Brother" mentors.

I think that has a lot to do with it - the results of third sometimes forth generation entitlement mentality.

Where? I don't think any at UGA but it can happen at any moment with college kids. You are only a beer or two away from the doghouse

I think UGA has turned the corner and will no longer take kids of questionable behavior. The talent level is so high they can be pretty selective but..............
