Cries grow for a football playoff

Count Michael Adams, president of the University of Georgia, among those publicly supporting a playoff for college football. Adams sent word to NCAA president Myles Brand and to the media about his take on the current Bowl Championship Series. It wasn't very positive.

"This year's experience with the BCS forces me to the conclusion that the current system has lost public confidence and simply does not work," Adams said. "It is undercutting the sportsmanship and integrity of the game."

Re: Cries grow for a football playoff

I’m on record as one that favors a playoff however it has as many flaws and pitfalls as the current BCS beauty pageant. Assume for a moment that next year we had an 8 team playoff. Based on history I feel certain we would have two SEC teams playing and most likely they would be the teams that played in the SEC Championship. For arguments sake assume UGA and LSU win their respective divisions and face each other, in this scenario they would be playing for the second time having met in the regular season.

In the above scenario let’s assume the same team won both games. If both LSU and UGA won their games in the 8 team playoff and faced each other for the NC who would tune in for a replay of game for the third time, probably only the fans of LSU and UGA and a small handful of others. Even if LSU and UGA split wins in the first two match-ups the third game would be of little interest outside the SEC.

I can see the possibility of SEC teams playing each other for a NC 3 or 4 times over the course of five years, or it could be the Big 10. The very real possibility of one conference playing year in and year out for the NC is not something I would enjoy.

I would like to see a return of the old system allowing the various polls declare a NC or possibly a plus 1 however a plus 1 would still open the door for one conference to place two teams in the NC game.

If the SEC started winnin the title left and right, then everyone wouldn't watch(except SEC fans), cause they would get tired of it quick, cause their teams didn't make it. Same for the Big10. On the other hand it could have the adverse fact as everyone would tune in hopin to see the team they hate get theior butts beat.
