Fox's BCS Bowl Work Deserves Abuse

Not a lot should be expected from Fox in the personality, play-by-play, analyst department (and lord knows we haven't gotten it). After all, they spend the entire season covering the NFL, and then have five bowl games in January (Cotton, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and BCS Championship). That means bringing over their NFL people who have barely seen the games most of the season and a variety of ex-coaches and players as guest analysts. Those are old complaints and while frustrating can at least be understood from and economic standpoint.

What has been inexcusable has been the technical production and camera work in the games. These bowl games have all been held in pro stadiums, where FOX has no excuse. They have spent plenty of time in these venues. They know the camera angles and looks. This is the area where they should be able to translate their NFL production values to the bowl games. Quick work in the trailer to find the right camera and view of what happened. To be quick with the replays and be able to diagram plays and what happened.

Instead it looks like they brought in regional workers. The camera angles have been sloppy. They have been two to three plays behind in showing vital replays. It is as if the producers have been scrambling to find the right camera to show what happened. The production values of these bowl games have rivaled that of the NBC/Notre Dame games.

As for the yellow first down line, apparently they must have Pat Summerall up in the booth serving as the spotter.

It has not been pretty, that's for sure. This is what everyone was concerned about coming into the season. All year long, there are certain guys you get used to covering college football. And then Fox buys the BCS rights - the ONLY college football they show all year - and this happens. The worst part is I don't think it's as bad as it could've been. At least, I don't remember anyone seriously botching players names or the rules or anything. But give the BCS back to ABC. That's where it belongs.

You must have missed several games I turned the sound off in both the Sugar and BCS game. Those two clowns - the masters of the under statement are pitiful. When Georgia lined up several times those numbnuts said "and the Gators are in a wide set" they had players names wrong in both games and did in fact screw up calls and had the rules wrong.

One thing that drove me over the edge - when they were showing a key replay just as it got to the point of importance - bam - we got the stupid BCS / FOX logo - gawd it was painful.

Well, I do tend to mentally tone out the announcers during the game, so... looks like it was worse than I realized.

It seemed every announcer had a problem with callin it close to a first down when the guy went past the marker by 5 yards

I thought it was bad with the jokers callin the NA$CAR races.

Fox doesn't carry a single NCAA football game during the regular season so of course they do not have announcers that can sound knowledgeable because thay honestly don't have a clue how to call the games.

But their regional FSN affiliates do. So why not borrown announcers from there? That's what I don't get.

I think it is also dumb that they don't have to carry regular games then just get the BCS. It's like if you gave CBS or NBC the World Series after covering a single game all year.

It belongs to the highest bidder... the quality would have to be so poor that the rating would drop and FOX lose interest...or so good that ABC is compel to bid again...and much higher.

I understand money is important to these places, but come on... isn't producing a quality product also important?

Oh, wait, this is the BCS we're talking about here. Nevermind.
