| 59 Yr. Old Makes Comeback.. Let’s all raise our coffee mugs to 59-year-old Mike Flynt, who finally got into a U.S. college football game on the weekend – and by into we don’t mean into the stadium to watch. We mean into the action; as a player. Flynt’s improbable return to college football after a 37-year absence hit a high point on the weekend when he played in Sul Ross State’s 45-42 overtime win against Texas Lutheran. Sul Ross State is an NCAA Division III school in Texas. Its coaching staff allowed Flynt to tryout with the Lobos after he discovered he still had college eligibility. His first collegiate football experience dated back to 1970, the year Jim Plunkett won the Heisman Trophy. After missing Sul Ross State’s first five games with injuries, Flynt took to the field against Texas Lutheran and helped block for the game-winning field goal. As you no doubt suspect, Flynt is not your typical grandfather. He’s been a life-ling fitness fanatic, a strength coach and has sold fitness equipment for a living. He’s also a decent blocker who is looking for more action at his true position, linebacker. globeandmail.com: Globe on Sports - Maki: An improbable return |
