Keith Jackson Retirement

This breaks my heart. The golden voice of college football and my favorite sports broadcaster, ABC's Keith Jackson, is calling it a career. "I'm finished with play-by-play forever," the 77-year-old told the New York Times. "This is the perfect time... I don't want to get back into the pressure cooker of play-by-play and worry about travel. I don't want to die in a stadium parking lot." I for one will definitely miss him. One of the best play-by-play guys ever, don't you agree?

Re: Keith Jackson Retirement

It is dissapointing, but he was starting to get a little incoherent this past year, so I think it is good too call it quits. Despite the fact I think college football has the best play-by-play and color commentators of any sport (collegiate or professional) there just doesn't seem to be anyone to replace Keith Jackson.
To those of you who don't follow the sport, Jackson is essentially the Howard Cossell of college football.

Funny to see that comparison, considering the history between the two and how Cosell all but stabbed Jackson in the back for the Monday Night Football job. I hope they don't move Mustberger up to the #1 team. He's okay I guess, but I'd much rather listen to Brad Nessler. Mike Tirico would've been a good option, but I doubt he does college games anymore with MNF.

Re: Keith Jackson Retirement

I like Nessler, but like you said Jackson was the man. He will surely be missed, but at least we had him for all of those years!!

Re: Keith Jackson Retirement

I would prefer a guy who is synonymous with college football (Dare I Kirk Herbstriet). Is there any chance Vern Lindquist will leave CBS? For the immediate future it doesn't really matter though because The BCS is moving to FOX. I really, really hope we are not fed NFL commentators for those games. The NFL isn't really the thinking man's game the same way college football is.
I wonder if the BCS move to FOX had anything to do with Jackson's retirement.

Re: Keith Jackson Retirement

I sure hope you are right. I definitely dont want NFL commentators doing the NCAA games. Can you hear Madden talking about USC vs Texas??

Re: Keith Jackson Retirement

Last time, he said he was just going to do West Coast games so he didn't have to travel so much, and somehow ABC talked him into doing a few outside of the West Coast. I think its legit now that ABC's lost the BCS... why stick around if you can't call the best games?

Keith Jackson Retire

Good riddance!

Half of my freaking 1998 UT Vols National Championship Game video is a trumped up tribute to his fake retirement. Instead of doing more features on the undefeated Vols 13-0 season... the 1st BCS Champion..., they wasted my video tape on dumping a trash can of confetti on him. This was at the height of the media & ESPN versus Tennessee war. Right after Peyton Manning and Vols everywhere were screwed out of the Heisman. Right after Chris Fowler called all of us trailer trash.

Poor keith jackson and his sidekicks had to miss the expected coronation of the seminoles when the (undefeated) heavy underdogs somehow managed to pull what the commentators thought was a miracle upset. Give me a break, we were undefeated and until the victory was secured, jackson barely acknowledged the Vols.

Get him off my TV. It's bad enough I gotta suffer through his gatorade docu-dramas.

Re: Keith Jackson Retirement

Haha, he wasn't exactly the beacon of objectivity during the OSU-Miami Fiesta Bowl in 2003 (Though Fouts was ten times worse). But everyone outside of Ohio seemingly loathes The Buckeyes so I guess I am immune. However, despite his clear bias in wanting to see Miami win (why wouldn't anyone want to see that upset?) I still am wondering who can possibly fill that void as the voice of college football. My guess is that person will not come around for awhile. I likened him to the Cosell of the college ranks, and he has yet to be sufficiently replaced (though I have high expectations for Kornheiser).
