| Re: best college football team ever? No, sorry, wrong answer. Not even Top Five, IMO. In no particular order, you've got the 61 Crimson Tide, 1971 Nebraska, 1945 Army, the 55 and 56 Sooners, the 88 Fighting Irish, all mentioned in this thread, which were better. And that's forgetting some of the Knute and Ara Fighting Irish teams, some more of the Bear's squads, Fielding Yost's point a minute offense... the list goes on and on. So while I respect you sticking up for your team, I can't realistically see the 2006 Florida squad belonging on this list.

Must reading on this topic. Could be the best breakdown of the subject right here: How to Calculate the Greatest College Football Team Ever - Associated Content It's an article titled "How to calculate the greatest college football team ever." |

| Re: best college football team ever? Hey, welcome to the forum, edsas, and thanks for joining us! I've gotta admit, I'm intrigued by the formula the author of that article uses. It's an interesting attempt to quantify an argument that's usually rather subjective. For those who haven't read it, basically he develops a formula that incorporates margin of victory, strength of schedule, quality of both wins and losses, and number of games played. It won't be to everyone's tastes -- no way should 2005 Texas get more points for a win over Baylor than for a win over Ohio State or USC, and he seems to totally ignore any teams per-1970 -- but it's still a good read. |

| Re: best college football team ever? Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I agree Noob. Not a perfect system, but it's at least an attempt. I think he might have cut his research off at 1990 (with a few early exceptions thrown in for good measure). All that calculating is probably pretty time-consuming. |

| Re: best college football team ever? 1966 Alabama- ironically, finished #2 in both final polls, mostly due to race/political circumstances surrounding the university that year(george wallace blocked doors to black students) Alabama finished unbeaten and untied and were 2 time defending national champs('64, '65) notre dame and michigan state played to a tie tha year and split the polls. Bama also easily handled nebraska in the orange bowl. after winning the super bowl that year, Vince lombardi was asked how it felt to be the best football team in the world, Lombardi Quipped' i don't know, we haven't played Alabama yet'
