Re: Most dominant team ever?

Let me go old school on everyone with a couple of nominees.

1. The 1959 Syracuse Orangemen of Ernie Davis. One of only two schools to lead the NCAA in seven statistical categories: points, yards gained, rushing yards, touchdown passes, first downs, yards allowed, rushing yards allowed. Averages 451 yards per game while allowing 96. Outscored their opponents 390-59 on the year, went 11-0 and won the National Title.

2. How could anyone forget the 1944-46 Army Cadets. Army went 27-0-1 run during this three year span and won 3 straight National Championships (its true, look it up). Remeber Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, Felix "Doc" Blanchard and Glenn Davis? Arguably the best backfield in NCAA history. In 1944, they set college football records for scoring (56.0 ppg) and margin of victory (52.1 ppg) that stand to this day. Meanwhile, for their careers, Davis and Blanchard scored 97 touchdowns and 585 points, then NCAA records for teammates (they may, in fact, still be records). Now if that's not dominance, I don't know what is.

Re: Most dominant team ever?

As far as teams I have seen play I can't think of a team more dominant than the 1991 Washington Huskies. Probably a bit of homerism showing through but they were monsters.

They are the only team I have seen where if they had a team in 3rd and 15 and the other team committed a penalty they would back them up to 3rd and 25 or whatever rather than declining the penalty and making it 4th down. They knew their defense would hold the team. That is how dominant their defense was.

Their offense wasn't anything to sniff at either. The average score of their games was 42-9 and they had 4 All-Americans on their teams. Then they got screwed and had to share the national title with Miami. Still steamed about that one.

Re: Most dominant team ever?

A couple of things to remember.

They went both ways.

They only played about half the game.

The game was about a full quarter less than the current tme rules allow.

Re: Most dominant team ever?

This debate could go on all day. ESPN tried to do this comparing teams to the USC team of 2004/5, but they compared them head to head, which is not quite fair (ex: how can you compare 2004 USC and 1940's Army?). So throwing that idea out:

1) Nebraska 1971 13-0 Beat Alabama in the Orange Bowl, beat OU 35-31 in the "Game of the Century" as its called by some

2) Oklahoma 1956 10-0 Middle of the 47 game winning streak, defense that held 6 teams scoreless, had a lineman finish fourth in the Heisman!

3) Nebraska 1995 50 plus points per game, ridiculous defense, beat four top 10 teams, beat Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl

4) Miami 2001 12-0, these guys were ridiculous, remember how bad they made Nebraska look in the Rose Bowl?

5) Army 1945 Mr. Inside, Mr. Outside, Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis, these guys beat ND 48-0, beat Navy 38-12 in front of 102,000, in 1945!

6) Notre Dame 1947 Johnny Lujack (Heisman winner), Leon Hart, George Connor, this team was made up of 41 future pro players, beat USC 38-7 in front of 105,000

7) USC 1972 12-0, beat Ohio State 42-17 in the Rose Bowl, voted number one by everyone in both polls, in those days that was impressive

8 Notre Dame 1988 Dominant, Tim Brown leaves, but here comes this kid they call the Rocket, Tony Rice, that Miami win 31-30 in one of the best games ever, over the course of the year this team beat #1 Miami, #2 USC in LA 27-10, and #3 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl, impressive

Re: Most dominant team ever?

Any National Champion is going to have appeared dominant and there is no way to acurately compare eras, as the players from the past that were undersized and much slower lacked all of the available things today that athletes have access to. If you want to talk of a program's dominance, I don't know if anyone can argue with the Oklahoma teams of the 1950s under Bud Wilkerson.

Re: Most dominant team ever?

The University of Michigan once had a team that was unbeaten and unscored upon. It was in 1901, and they outscored their opponents, 550-0. (That includes a 49-0 victory over Stanford in the very first Rose Bowl.) It would be impossible to be any more dominant than that.

Also, Stanford quit midway through the 4th because the humiliation. The 'point-a-minute squad' would likely have reached 60.

Re: Most dominant team ever?

That michigan team in 1901 was a part of the 1901-1905 michigan team that was one of the best ever (55-1-1). They outscored their opponents in that stretch 2,821 - 42. That's right almost 3,000 points to just 7 touchdowns. They lost 2-0 and tied 6-6 (I can't remember if the loss was to Chicago and the tie to Minnesota or vice versa). They beat Buffalo to 136-0 I believe. It has been years since I read about that team but they were unbelieveable. I realize that players and rules are different now but whatever era, whatever sport, when you outscore your opponents by 2,779 points, you are dominating.
