Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football

From what I've heard there are three factors in the BCS Rankings. Computer, player, and coach. Can you explain each? I don't really understand how a ranking is reached.

Top 25 NCAA Football Rankings - College Football

This link will take you to last year's final rankings (before the BCS Championship game was played). The computer rankings have not begun to weigh in this year.

Thre are three polls that are considered:
1) Harris poll
2) Coaches Poll
3) Computer rankings

Each of the three parts carry equal weight and the overall average determines the rankings.

Please let me know if you still have questions after reviewing the ranking system from last season.

I can't understand why a coaches poll is used. In all human polls there is regional bias, coaches will typically favor the teams in their own conference. On top of that, a coach only sees two games a week....the one his team played in and the one involving his next opponent.

There has to be a human element in the mix. Too much reliance on computer statitstics would never be accepted. Coaches do watch all of the news feeds (at least in their respective confrences and top 25 teams) and read statistics of top ranked teams.

Would anyone stand for computer calculations for deciding the Heisman Trophy winner?

Giving out awards is different than picking which teams go for the championship. I would rather have writers or some people of that sort voting for the Heisman winners, and for the BCS rankings, if the computers were reliable and the ranking made sense, why not have them be the only thing picking the rankings? Coaches can be biased.

I agree. I would rather see the AP poll used instead of the coaches poll.

Question: Cant college teams go for the two point conversion?
I was wondering why Kiffin didnt go for it instead of that last field goal attempt. Anything had to be better than that kicker.

Yes college teams can go for a two point conversion.

My best guess on why he did not go for two points is that the one point PAT still gave them enough points to win with a FG. If Kiffin had gone for two pionts and failed, the score would havae been 12-9 and a last drive FG would have tied the game and sent the game into overtime.

Because the fix is in, do you really believe that Terrance Cody suddenly blocks not one but two field goals? I saw this script before in the Carolina Tampa Bay games. Carolina's Kris Jenkins comes from out of nowhere to block two field goals with the same result. TISK....TISK...TISK.... The NCAA got caught fixing games again in order to boost ratings.

Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football

Is there a suspension for players who hit helmet to helmet like they do in the NFL?

I don't know of any suspensions for helment to helment in NCAA football. I could see it happening if the foul would be flagrant or for a repeat offender.

Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football

Deliberate helment to helment contact is a personal foul unnecessary roughness or unsportsman like conduct depending on the referee's opinion and it results in the ejection of the player. The enforcement is spotty at best. As far as suspensions the NCAA is yet to hand any down but that doesn't mean they won't.

Do you honestly think they fixed those field goal blocks? And what do you mean again? When was the first time?

2003 Carolina at Tampa game. Do you realize that both Alabama and Tennesse had coaches that participated in that particular NFL game as well as the college version? Funny the two opposing defensive coaches had been on oppsite side lines in the pros as well. Yes, I do believe the fix was in. Nobody had heard of Kris Jenkins until that game much like nobody had heard of Terrance Cody outside of Alabama. Both have two blocks and both block the last play of the game. If you were Lane kiffen and you had to choose a script to lose by you would have chosen that one too. Oddly enough that loss will actually help him in recruiting.
