Welcome to our forum. please go back to page one of this thread. Scroll to the top or bottom of the page and click the back button. there are posts that cover red shirt, gray shirt, walk ons and more. Generally lefty was correct they do wear red jersies in practice and was the original origin.

We hope to see you posting often and hope you find our forum fun.

There seem to be a number of college players being arrested. Of course the NFL has Roger Goodell and its Personal Conduct Policy. I was wondering how this is handled in the NCAA.

Minor enfractions are handled by the coach, athletic department and school. Felonies are a bit different - the law handles them first then the coach, athletic department, school etc.

Many college coaches and athletic departments work with local law enforcement on misdemeanors to have players perform community service to reduce fines and jail time, especially for first offenders. Most universities will automatically make a player charged with a felony on the no athletic participation list pending the outcome of a grand jury and expel them from their respective teams and from the university if found guilty or if the player plea bargains.

Most of you know I am new to college sports.
There are an awful lot of arrests of college players. I can click on any of my college news sites and I can almost be there will be some kid in trouble, some more than once. Are there more kids getting in trouble, or does it just seem that way because of all those new sites?
It makes me sick everytime I read about one. They are so darn young!

Bette I agree it is alarming to see the stories pop up almost daily. I think is says more about where we have evolved than where we have been. In this zero tolerance, politically correct time more kids are getting into trouble for things that would have never made the news in the past. Take the two UGA players recently arrested for rubbing a pregnant girl’s tummy. I don’t condone the behavior but in a time not long ago this would have been either a non-issue or the girl would have slapped the dumb kids and told them to keep their hands off her body.

The under age drinking is also more of an issue now than in the past. Again I don’t condone underage drinking or DUI but we are going overboard in some of these areas. What college kid doesn’t, at some point, drink while underage? The DUI laws have changed dramatically as well. I’m all for keeping the drunks off the road but with the current outrage, fueled by MADD, we have draconian laws running rampant.

I could go on and on citing more laws that have been promoted by the feel good people but it is senseless. I do think society is making more criminals by expecting perfect behavior from 18 – 22 year old kids.

Well JRL we have come to expect more from these kids after all they are groomed from the time they hit JR. High they know someone is watching them. Kids are doing stupid stuff now compared to rolling a fraternity house with toilet paper. You know most of the problems go back to one thing lack of respect. These kids have a " I don't give a _ _ _ _ attitude " and that is why they end up on police blotters. The coaches have thier work cut out for them.

Stoney two things from my prospective stand out. First, I disagree with your comparison of rolling frat houses and the seemingly endless stream of arrests being any different than the past. The majority of the problems we see in the paper are minor offenses, underage drinking and marijuana use. The fact that they are athletes makes them news worthy, a dubious and flawed thought process at best; they are simply a slice of the entire student body. A story about a regular student getting busted for underage drinking doesn’t sell papers. A story about the starting LB getting busted for the same offense makes headlines in the sports section and sells papers.

The other assumption you make centers on the “grooming” issue. I think you are missing the point here. The serious offenses we see are a product of being coddled, a word that makes more sense than groomed. They are groomed to play a game from Jr. High on and coddled or protected. Many get a free pass as long as they perform on the field. Many are not taught social skills and have little understanding of the consequences resulting from poor decisions. By the time they enter college they have pretty well established their behavioral patterns.
