| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football Many college coaches and athletic departments work with local law enforcement on misdemeanors to have players perform community service to reduce fines and jail time, especially for first offenders. Most universities will automatically make a player charged with a felony on the no athletic participation list pending the outcome of a grand jury and expel them from their respective teams and from the university if found guilty or if the player plea bargains. |

| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football Most of you know I am new to college sports. There are an awful lot of arrests of college players. I can click on any of my college news sites and I can almost be there will be some kid in trouble, some more than once. Are there more kids getting in trouble, or does it just seem that way because of all those new sites? It makes me sick everytime I read about one. They are so darn young!

The under age drinking is also more of an issue now than in the past. Again I don’t condone underage drinking or DUI but we are going overboard in some of these areas. What college kid doesn’t, at some point, drink while underage? The DUI laws have changed dramatically as well. I’m all for keeping the drunks off the road but with the current outrage, fueled by MADD, we have draconian laws running rampant. I could go on and on citing more laws that have been promoted by the feel good people but it is senseless. I do think society is making more criminals by expecting perfect behavior from 18 – 22 year old kids.

| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football Well JRL we have come to expect more from these kids after all they are groomed from the time they hit JR. High they know someone is watching them. Kids are doing stupid stuff now compared to rolling a fraternity house with toilet paper. You know most of the problems go back to one thing lack of respect. These kids have a " I don't give a _ _ _ _ attitude " and that is why they end up on police blotters. The coaches have thier work cut out for them. |

Stoney two things from my prospective stand out. First, I disagree with your comparison of rolling frat houses and the seemingly endless stream of arrests being any different than the past. The majority of the problems we see in the paper are minor offenses, underage drinking and marijuana use. The fact that they are athletes makes them news worthy, a dubious and flawed thought process at best; they are simply a slice of the entire student body. A story about a regular student getting busted for underage drinking doesn’t sell papers. A story about the starting LB getting busted for the same offense makes headlines in the sports section and sells papers. The other assumption you make centers on the “grooming” issue. I think you are missing the point here. The serious offenses we see are a product of being coddled, a word that makes more sense than groomed. They are groomed to play a game from Jr. High on and coddled or protected. Many get a free pass as long as they perform on the field. Many are not taught social skills and have little understanding of the consequences resulting from poor decisions. By the time they enter college they have pretty well established their behavioral patterns. |

| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football I have a question, though I am not sure how much you guys will be able to help me. I never played highschool football. Every year I would go through the conditioning, but something would come up that would get in the way of football. Family issues mostly, so I never ended up playing no matter how much I wanted to play. Now I am a year out of highschool, and have a job, but I really want to go to college and play football at Ohio State. I know they have try-outs, and I don't think there should be anything getting in the way of grades (I have a 3.57 gpa and a 29 on my ACT. Its no phenomenal, but it is better than nothing). I'm just curious as to what you guys think my chances are at playing. I want to be a Wide Receiver, or DB, or kick returner I am 6 ft 1 185lbs and I run a 40 @ 4.45. I have just started speed training, and I am starting to run to gain endurance and lift weights now. My speed comes from baseball. Whenever we would play football against highschool and college kids, I would blow by them. I'm just curious as to what you guys think my chances are, because from what I heard, if I have a chance at all, it is going to be an extremely uphill battle for me. And, if you guys have any advice, or work-out tips, I am open ears. Thank you |

| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football You would be most likely classified as a walk-on - and it will be a challenge indeed to become a starter. Most likely you would play as a scout team member (practice fodder for the starters) and primarily emulate the opponent for the next game. I do know some have gone from walk-on status to scholarship to starter. But you would be playing ball. I would talk to one of the coaches (in person if possible) and tell him what you want to do. He may say come on out or he may suggest another alternative (JUCCO or smaller school). Above all I would encourage you to follow your dream - nothing worse than looking back ten years from now and saying - Damn I wish I had tried. I can tell you a friend of mines son played divison 1 college ball (4 year starter) and went undrafted. He had a dream of playing in the NFL and worked his butt off and was essentially a walk on with the Colts. He is now considered one of the best centers in the NFL and three time All-Pro with the Colts. DO IT |

Jeff is one of the finest individuals I have ever known and he can eat like a horse - I cooked ribs for for 12 (6 eating) when he was here last we all ate one rack each - he ate all the rest. |

| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football Well... I know that my mentality use to be one of mediocrity, and my High school coach really wanted me to play. I had a better forty time then all of the kids in high school, with all the problems I had, my own, and with my family, I just couldn't do it. I played baseball, which, whenever I was in baseball conditioning, I was in the high 4.2 lower 4.3 range. One of my baseball coaches, one that coached Joey Galloway in baseball (Even though he went to play football) told me that he hasn't seen my speed since Joey. He even said it would be a good race between us too in our primes. I mean I am not going to delude myself into thinking I'm that fast, but it was some compliment. And I have started getting that hunger that just won't go away. So I will Try. And hopefully, one day, I'll make it. And if I don't it won't be from lack of trying |

| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football I cant give you the same info and encouragement the guys do. But I know this. When you were younger and things were rough, its hard sometimes to overcome that mediocre mentality.Thats water over the bridge now. You know what you want now, you're more stable and you know its going to be a rough road. Keep your goals in mind and dont give up on your dreams. You have the skills you need, the talent, the grades. You ever need encouragement, we have good people on here. If you dont want to put it on the boards, pm someone. Hang in there and the very best of luck to you. |

| Re: Ask The Experts ... College Football Not sure if I understood what I saw. A player dove into the end zone and left the ground so many feet before the line and got a penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior?????? |
