Fisher DeBerry steps down as Air Force head coach

After 23 years as head coach (27 total years) at the Air Force Academy, Fisher DeBerry is done. Since 1984, DeBerry led Falcons football to 17 winning seasons. The highlights of his final season was a 39-3 win over Army and a close 31-30 loss to Tennesse. DeBerry had a total record of 35-11 against rivals Army and Navy. It's ashame that his final season ended with a 4-8 season.

This guy was coach of the year in 1985, at a school were you can't recruit and you get nothing but under sized players. He did an amazing job, truly a great coach who should be commemorated....

Wow, this is a bit of a surprise. He was a great coach... like domer says, he took over this team and, despite the limits placed upon him by the armed forces, was able to keep them competitive year in and year out. 17 winning seasons in 23 years, wow. How many Commander In Chief trophies did he win? I imagine the number is rather high...

He won 14 of the Academy's 16 Commander-In-Chief trophies. He has been inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame, and the South Carolina Hall of Fame. He's the most winningest coach in Air Force history, with a final record of 169-107-1. He's beat Notre Dame three times while coaching at Air Force.

Air Force has found a replacement.

The Houston Texans offensive coordinator Troy Calhoun, who is a graduate of the Academey, has accepeted the job.

Calhoun is the sixth coach in school history, ad the first graduate to hold the postition.
