Most of the time, fans of the SEC champions need to purchase Sugar Bowl tickets if they want to see their boys play in the postseason. That's because the college football classic, which barring catastrophe is held each year in the city of New Orleans, has long had a standing agreement with the Southeastern Conference to host the winner of the conference title. Of course, with the advent of the Bowl Championship Series and more recently the BCS title game, the affiliation now stands only if the SEC champion is not one of the two top ranked teams. Originally, the game was held at Tulane Stadium, but starting in 1974, its home has been the Louisiana Superdome. The only exception came in 2006, when the game had to be played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. The 2006 game is, to date, the only Sugar Bowl to be played outside of the state of Louisiana. Original Sugar Bowl Tickets
So when were the first Sugar Bowl tickets made available? Well, that would be a couple of months before the January 1, 1935 game, the first in the history of this now classic bowl game. Much of the credit for securing this postseason NCAA football game in New Orleans goes to a sports editor by the name of Fred Rigby, who long campaigned for such a game in the Louisville city. Thanks to his efforts, a group called the New Orleans Mid-Winter Sports Association secured enough funding to host the contest, not to mention the cost-free use of Tulane's football stadium. The Green Wave participated in that first Sugar Bowl, hosting Pop Warner and the Temple Owls. Tulane won the game, 20-14, thanks to a pair of Dick Hardy touchdowns. The game was dubbed a success, as more than 22,000 fans were in attendance, and thus a classic college bowl game was born.
