Who is the best coach right now?

Every fan can recall a coach from thier lifetime that is arguably the best coach of the era like a Bear Bryant or Bobby Bowden or Joe Pa. These titans trailblazed thier way to greatness with different tactics. Given the climate of today's football who stands head and shoulders above everybody else and why?

Like him or not my vote goes to Nick Saban, but not for the reasons you think. My reason is because he has won two national titles at two different schools and may have won more if he hadn't gone to the NFL. Alabama not only looks rebuilt with an unheard of 6 All-Americans but they are reloading much to the chagrin of other SEC schools. Saban has a sheer force of will to dominate his team and make them follow his formula for success. The results speak for themselves.

I can see a vote for N Satan, but he needs more time in to qualify for an actual "Greatest" label. It would have to be Joe Pa. He is still at it and still a winning coach.

Just for the record, I hate Nick Satan! But, he definatly has his following that think he's the greatest. Every name in your list has at one time or another been the best at what he did. Some longer than others, but all had their moment in the sun.

Hey Vincesanity82,

This isn't the best ever coach, just the best one out there now. So if you were starting a team who would you go after?

Re: Who is the best coach right now?

Gary Patterson has to be on the short list along with Chris Peterson, Kyle Wittingham, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and keep an eye on Bo Pelini.

Some other solid coaches are Mack Brown, Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll(I know he went to the NFL, but his career at USC was impressive), Jim Tressel, and keep an eye on Steve Sarkisian at Washington.

Talking Re: Who is the best coach right now?

AW, I hate to admit it but it would have to be between two guys. Urban or Nickie. I cant stand either one of them, but they have carried off the last two trophies. Florida got it last time but Bama nipped at their heals until that one game I wont mention.(sorry Stoney, I was pulling for you guys in that one)

Re: Who is the best coach right now?

He's not flashy like many of the other, and yah, I know, he hasn't won some of the "big" games, but Jim Tressel has put up a record that is hard for anyone to match over the last 6-8 years.

Come on man... Jim Tressel? His record is easy to match you would have been better off with suggesting Jerry Moore of Applachian State.

Re: Who is the best coach right now?

An interesting post. Coaching philosophy is more similar than most give credit. Strong, physical and fast is the trademark of players recruited by both coaches. They hire and develop talented assistant coaches. Both are obsessive compulsives who micro manage the details.

Re: Who is the best coach right now?

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Jerry Moore and Appalachian State win titles and hand Michigan the most embarassing defeat in thier school's history? Jim Tressel looks pathetic by comparison of on the field accomplishments. Winning the big game is what counts in sports that is why these kids go to your school.

When did Tressel ever NOT beat Michigan? He also has won a national championship and holds multiple conference championships.

Look a little closer, you'll find most kids go to school close to home...this is true for Ohio State, USC, Texas, or Florida.

My point was the accomplishments of Jerry Moore who beat a ranked DIV 1 opponent with inferior talent of a DIV 2 school are better than Jim Tressel's. Jerry wins his division's national championships and gets ignored by the main stream media. I promise you LSU and Michigan will not overlook the Mountaineers again. Imagine what he could do with the talent level of Ohio State. His record would be better than Tressel's.

You are making an assumption, but let's be real here. There is a reason why some coaches are FCS and others are FBS. Not knocking Moore's accomplishments but you make it sound like he managed all these titles with inferior talent at his level. Truth is, he most likely had the best talent in FCS most of his years there.

What I am saying is Jim Tressel should be winning the BIG 10 every year and playing in a BCS bowl. If Jerry had that kind of talent he would have. Something you don't know about coach Moore, the man cares about his players becoming good upstanding men and contributors to society. His interest is seeing these boys truly become successful because he knows 99% of them will never play on Sundays.
