| What if College Baksetball had a BCS ? San Antonio, TX – You know what the beauty of the way that College Basketball determines a champion, apposed to College Football? It is decided on the field (or court). Now tonight the teams that were considered the four best all season long will play in the two national semi-finals games. Those games are UCLA vs. Memphis and North Carolina vs. Kansas all in San Antonio, but though we could the teams that were considered the two best all in year in the National Title Game, it will be because they played their way there. But that races the question in my mind, what if College Basketball had a BCS? Well first thing’s first, all the controversy that begins after the BCS picks a College Football Championship, would be nothing compared what would happen when they picked a basketball title game. Second, it would eliminate all chances of a Cinderella story, no Davidson going to the Elite 8, no George Mason going to the Final Four, just who the computers believe was best. Basically it would take all the drama out of what 90% of American citizens have come to know and love. College Basketball having a BCS would also likely eliminate conference tournaments. There is no way the NCAA could justify have George, who was a fourteen seed in the actually tournament in one of their BCS game, they wouldn’t let it happen, but for now we will count the winners of the regular season as automatic BCS game bids. Now the question is if College Basketball had a BCS, who would play in the title game? Well, there is one that would be in the game no doubt. That is the North Carolina Tar Heels. They are ranked number one in the AP and USA Today Polls, and are second in RPI. They get in easily. Now the second sport in the title is up for grabs between Memphis and UCLA. Picking between UCLA and Memphis in a BCS like system would be like drawing straws. Memphis ranked 2nd in the AP Poll, 3rd in the USA Today Poll, and 3rd in RPI. UCLA is ranked 3rd in the AP Poll, 2nd in the USA Today Poll, and 4th in RPI, so who gets the last spot? Here is the answer. The UCLA Bruins. Why, yes Memphis has the higher RPI and strength of schedule, but UCLA plays in the Pac-10, which is arguably they best conference in College Basketball. Memphis played in Conference USA were they got the only bid into the tourney. Here is what the BCS Bowls would look like: National Title Game: UCLA Bruins vs. North Carolina Tar Heels Sugar Bowl: Tennessee Volunteers vs. Georgetown Hoyas Fiesta Bowl: Kansas Jayhawks vs. Louisville Cardinals Orange Bowl: Memphis Tigers vs. Duke Blue Devils Rose Bowl: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Texas Longhorns Now wouldn’t you rather watch the NCAA tournament than just those five games, even if they are great games, the Tournament is why people watch College Basketball and other than the Super Bowl the best sporting event of the year, and thank goodness for us we don’t have a BCS in College Basketball. Tonight will be a great night of games on CBS. UCLA vs. Memphis at 6:07 PM Eastern and 8:47 PM Eastern.
