Minnesota led IU by a point with 8:26 to play -- and then the Gophers were outscored 23-8. It's been that kind of season for Smith, whose 18-11 team has beaten one opponent with a top-100 computer ranking. Last season Minnesota lost 22 of 31 games. This season the Gophers still have a chance to squeeze out 20 victories.
Tubby Smith's current team at the University of Minnesota probably secured its place in the National Invitation Tournament.

His assistant coaches and players say he loves living in Minneapolis and has Gophers fans thinking great things.
"I wish I could play for him four years instead of just one," Minnesota senior center Spencer Tollackson said. "When he wants us to really start working hard, he tells us about how hard his Kentucky teams worked and what they achieved.
"He's put the buzz back in Gopher basketball. It's the toughest ticket in town."
"If not for Matt Painter and Purdue, Tubby is Big Ten Coach of the Year," said Vince Taylor, the former University of Louisville assistant coach now assisting Smith.

Stole!?!..... you want the S.O.B you can have him..... I havent like him since 2001.... Ran him out of town? that's a matter of opinion. He hightailed it after droppin us out of the top25 and killin our recruitin. He left cause he saw what he had comin in this year and knew he wouldn't do any good.
