March Madness Upsets

Plenty of early upsets, near-upsets, and upsets in the making during Day 1 of the NCAA Tournament.

#11 Wisconsin-Milwaukee 82, #6 Oklahoma 74, F
#10 Alabama 90, #7 Marquette 85, F
#12 Montana 87, #5 Nevada 79, F
#9 NC-Wilmington 53, #8 George Washington 42, 2nd
#4 Boston College 88, #13 Pacific 79, F-2OT
#2 Tennessee 63, #15 Winthrop 61, F
#14 Xavier 39, #3 Gonzaga 36, Half

Which result from the games up to this point surprises you the most? I've got to tell you, that BC-Pacific game was awesome. Much closer than the final score, to be sure. Very surprised about Montana, too. Not so much Oklahoma's loss, as a lot of people predicted that one. Nor would I be surprised to see Xavier pull off the upset over the Zags.

Cool Re: March Madness Upsets

Marquette losing was the most shocking to me. (In my secondary pool - the one I threw in at the last second to cover myself, I had them going all the way...I might as well have taken $25 and buried it in the ground.)

But In my main pool I had Wisconsin, Montana, GW, BC, Winthrop, Gonzaga.
So the fact that these games were close didn't surprise me at all. For the most part, there are always so many upsets in this round that very little surprises me. (Unless a 16 would beat a 1).

Gonzaga was way too close for me. I picked them to win the whole thing in my main pool. But they won--that's what counts. That's what this tourney is about...survive and advance.

Re: March Madness Upsets

Indiana was down by 1 with 13 seconds left to the 11 seed (San Diego State) but one of their kids caught the loose ball and shot a three and are up 2 with 3 seconds left now.

Wow.

Indian wins. I had SD State in my main pool. Oh well. The key thing in this tourney is that your final 4 survive. Everybody loses some 1st round games.

Re: March Madness Upsets

San Diego State blew that game, I had them in my pool. At Least I hit the Texas A&M game.

Re: March Madness Upsets

You can always tell with Steve Fisher is coaching-just look for a poorly coached player that doesn't know the rules of the game make a fatal mistake as the clock is winding down. The San Diego State kid doesn't pick up the ball after an Indiana player knocks it into the backcourt.Chris Webber must have been nodding his head in approval.

The trend holds: Two 12's upset 2 5's....Montana beats Nevada and Syracuse loses to A&M.

Re: March Madness Upsets

I would love to know what the percentages 12s over 5s have been in recent years. It certainly seems to happen a lot, but exactly how often does the upset occur in these match-ups? Anyone happen to know where I might find something like that out?

Re: March Madness Upsets

I definitely thought that the biggest upset was Montana over Nevada. Nevada was tough all season, and there was talk about them making some noise. But Montana played a good game and controlled the pace throughout.

Re: March Madness Upsets

I lost three games in the final ten seconds yesterday (SDSU-IU, Marquette-Bama and Winthrop-Tennessee). Costing me about 33 points in the way we score our bracket. Needless to say that is a lot, and I took those underdogs for there point value, but could it have gone any worse? I guess UW-Milwaukee could have blown their lead.

Re: March Madness Upsets

I would think that Lefty is the most upset over all the upsets.
Syracuse had to be upsetting. So Lefty forget about the upset and get a new mindset.

Re: March Madness Upsets

Now see, THIS is what makes the NCAA Tourney so great:
Northwestern St. knocks off Iowa. N.C. State beats California. Bradley upsets Kansas. George Mason downs Michigan State. Bucknell beats Arkansas. Penn, UAB, Murray State and Kent State all came close to pulling off the upsets, and even Albany have UConn a run there for a while. You just never know what's going to happen.
