John Chaney Retire

ESPN is reporting that longtime Temple basketball coach John Chaney is going to retire. Chaney is one of the winningest coaches in basketball history. First, can anyone confirm this story, and second, where would you rank this apparently departing coaching legend among the all-time greats?

Re: John Chaney

Confirmed. His wife is ill and there's a press conference called for today.

Chaney will be missed...he's a basketball God in the Philly area.

Cool Re: John Chaney

I didn't see that many Temple games but in the times I did see them, Cheney's team were always prepared. It looked like he got the most out what talent he had out on the court.

Re: John Chaney

John Chaney has always been one of my favorite coaches and Temple is one of my favorite teams. I love Chaney's style and how he coaches and college basketball will be a worse place without him. And how can you hate anyone who tells Calapari that he is gonna kill him?

Re: John Chaney

Great coach no doubt. But did anyone see that press conference? Man, I havent heard such incoherent babble since Don Rumsfeld's last press coference on the war in Iraq. What the hell was the guy talking about.
He appeared at first to be giving some kind of stump speech, as if her were running for city council in philly.
If you were not sure of how you felt about him retiring before that, I certainly hope you feel as I do that it was obviously time for him to go.

Re: John Chaney Retire

A great coach. His players will all swear by him. Did a great deal to help alot of inner city kids. But at some point he decided to become the conscience of the country. He is the equivalent of an African-American Bobby Knight in some regards. Threatened to kill a man at a press conference and sent in a player to hurt another team's player. Even Knight never went this far, but somehow Cheney was able to get away with it.
