March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

Who does everyone think the No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tourney will be?

Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

UConn and Nova are the only locks in my opinion. Duke will probably get a #1 seed regardless of how well they play in their conference tourney, but if the end the year with three straight losses heading into The Big Dance, anything is possible, I am really skeptic as to whether or not Duke can win their conference tournament. And if OSU happens too win the Big Ten tournament, they should get a one seed. They play in the second most competitive conference and to win the regular season and conference tournament would be worthy of a one seed. Of course, that is a big "if".
Other teams:
Gonzaga: Conference schedule is to soft.
Texas: Two too many bad losses.
Memphis: See Gonzaga.
George Washington: Are you kidding me?
After these eight teams, is there even anyone else contending for a one seed? Illinois is a pitch black dark horse. It wll be interesting to see how much influence the conference tounrnaments actually do have. Ultimately it will pan out to be:
UConn
Nova
Duke (By default)
Memphis: They have taken Cinncinati's place as the above average team in an otherwise mediocre conference (Yes, I am aware that Conference USA had its exceptional years, but they were just that: exceptions. Losing the majority of the quality programs to The Big East does not help matters either).

I'm with you on UConn, Villanova and Duke, but I still think Texas will wind up with that other top seed. A couple of bad losses, but a bunch of big wins. I think it'll all balance out in the end.

I agree with these four. UT is a number one seed in the Big 12 tournament. If they win, expect them to take a number one.

Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

Does anybody think that Memphis may be able to sneak in as a #1 seed if they win their Conference Tournament?

Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

Well, I don't know how this will play into it, but in the latest Associated Press basketball poll, it's UConn #1, Nova #2, Duke #3, Gonzaga #4, Memphis #5, GW #6, Ohio State #7, Texas #8, Illinois #9 and UNC #10. Suddenly, I'm thinking maybe it'll be the Buckeyes, not the Longhorns, as that last top seed. It's a toss-up, really.

I think UConn, Villanova, Duke, and Ohio State get the top seeds with Gonzaga, Texas, and North Carolina close behind.

Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

Hi, desertrat. Welcome to GoTeamsGo and thanks for joining us here in the NCAA hoops forum. I'm curious as to who you'd have as your 4th No. 2 seed. Personally, I think I'd go with OSU/Texas [whichever doesn't get the No. 1 seed], Gonzaga, Memphis and GW as the second seeds. Of course, a lot of that depends upon what UNC does in the ACC tourney. If they win it - who knows then?

Memphis likely gets the other 2 seed IMO. If UCLA sweeps Pac-10 tourney they may slip in and grab a #2 also. This is such a strange year with so many mid-majors ranked so high, really is hard to predict who will fall where.

Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

I forgot to say thanks for the welcome. This forum seems to cover just about every sport and I like the breakdowns by division. I post on a couple other sites but my favorite one was overrun by kids that really don't have much to say. I look forward to getting to know some folks here.

Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

If it comes down to OSU or Texas for the fourth number one seed (say they both win their conference tourneys or both lose in the first round), the clear choice is OSU. OSU has lost four games all season, one at home and three on the road. The combined four losses totaled a deficit of fifteen points. Texas lost to the pedystrian OSU (Oklahoma State) by 21 points, to Duke by 32, to Tennessee by 18, Oklahoma by 10 and recently lost a close game to A&M. Based on these statistics alone OSU should get the nod over UT.

Thumbs up Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

I thank you're right about OSU, and it would be nice to see them have their time in the sun...but I expect Texas will get the nod. Despite some of their unexpected recent losses, they also tend to win big and are usually pretty prominent in the minds of those who make these kinds of selections. It may not be fair, but there it is. I remember wondering, way back when I was in college (in the days of the Southwest Conference), why Texas A&M football never got ranked above, say, 20, even when they beat Texas and had excellent records...and part of it was the same bias that I think will put Texas in the last number one seed for basketball this year.

Re: March Madness - No. 1 Seeds

Thats precisely why I think we need a playoff as opposed to the BCS. Selecting only two teams that have a chance to play for the national title is too narrow of a field when individuals innate biases factor into the equation so heavily.
But thats for another thread, in basketball it is almost irrelevant what seed a team ends up with. Especially with the current day parity in college basketball a second round match-up for a two seed is just as challenging for that of a one seed. As long as they get a bid and it is somewhat indicative of where they rank amongst their peers. Even if OSU gets a two seed, they are going to end up playing their 1st and 2nd round games in Dayton, Ohio. So it is almost in their favor to avoid a one seed.
