Bobby Knight record

Well, as I'm sure you've all heard by now (since the media has been talking about it endlessly), Bobby Knight passed Dean Smith yesterday by winning his 880th career game. Mike Greenberg this morning is calling Knight of the great coaches in sports history, right up there with Wooden and Lombardi. I personally think that's a laughable notion, considering it took him a good five extra seasons to get one more win than the Dean. What do you guys think of Bobby Knight and his coaching legacy?

I am not high on Knight, but give the General his due...he has done it with far less talent then Wooden, Smith and Lombardi...a number of Hall of Famers and high draft picks passed through those coaches...Knight basically had Isisah...

Re: Bobby Knight record

The one thing Knight will never be accused of is cheating. Wooden had that shady deal going with some booster that funneled all the great talent to UCLA that is swept under the rug when talking about his accomplishments.. Smith is another story. A great coach and a good guy too. Talentwise though, Smith had 12 NBA All-Stars play for him, Knight had 1.

Re: Bobby Knight record

Whether they become NBA all-stars can have something to do with the caliber of coaching that they receive along the way though.

Cool Re: Bobby Knight record

Knight is a great coach and does a lot of good -ex- his players graduate more than most programs. But that doesn't excuse the fact that he's a bully and abusive.

Naw, not at that level...Bill Walton, Jabbar, Jordan, Worthy, etc...these are all players that would have been great under any coaching system...they were not the product of specfic coaching...

But look at Michael Jordan. Dean Smith actually held Michael Jordan back, because of his coaching. There was a joke that I heard once:

Q: Who's the only person that can hold Michael Jordan to 15 pts a game?
A: Dean Smith
