The Cleveland Indians have traded P Paul Byrd to the Boston Red Sox.

According to the Associated Press, Boston is "hoping to boost a rotation hurt by an injury to Tim Wakefield and the struggles of Clay Buchholz... The Red Sox will send either a player to be named or cash to the Indians... The 37-year-old Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA this season. But he has won all four of his starts since the All-Star break with a 1.24 ERA." What do you think about this deal? Why did the Indians trade Byrd?

It is, but in baseball there's an odd clause that says that trades can still happen as long as a player clears waivers first. Byrd did.

You're referring to the non-waiver deadline. You can still trade now, but the player has to go through waivers first.

Any player can be put on waivers by his team, and the player does not need to be informed.

Other teams have the chance to make a claim on the player during a 47 hour window.

If the player is claimed, the team that placed him on waivers has the option of pulling him back. If the team pulls him back they can't trade him for 30 days.

If his team decides not to pull him back:

Option 1: His team can work out a trade with the team that claimed him. Any player involved in the trade who is on a 40 man roster must go through waivers first.

Option 2: His team can just dump him and his salary on the team that claimed him, getting no player in return.

Option 3: No one claims him, and his team is free to trade him to any team.

If more than one team places a claim on a player, the winning claim is awarded based on worst record or the league the claiming team is in.

That pretty much how it happens.

I also think waivers close on August 31st but that may be wrong.

well whats the point of the deadline then? They make such a big deal about this deadline.
I thought a deadline was in effect to give a team making a run a deadline to get thier ducks in a row.

So could the Rays make a quick trade right now to pick up a bat to make up for Crawford and langoria now on the DL ?

Yes they could but I think it might be easier to trade before the trade deadline.
