| GM's Lack of Offseason Action Has Hurt Mark Shapiro, the Indians' General Manager, did very little by way of acquiring everyday players during the offseason. So, the team is basically stuck with pretty much the same players as they had last season. The problem with that is that the corner outfield positions and third base have been problem spots. First base and DH have also contributed less than what most prognosticators and fans would have expected. Infielder Asdrubal Cabrera, who arrived very ready to play late last season, has come back to earth. It's still pretty cold in Cleveland, but the home run production has been minimal. Last year, the Indians occasionally had a first inning in which they scored five or more runs, to effectively put the opponent out of his misery. That's another thing that has not happened this season. It appears unlikely, as of now, that the Tribe will match last season's 96 regular season wins total. |
