Cool Indians cut Hernandez

Quote:
The Cleveland Indians cut veteran reliever Roberto Hernandez...The 42-year-old Hernandez, whose 326 saves are 11th on the career list, was designated for assignment. Cleveland has 10 days to trade him or place him on waivers.

"This was a very difficult decision because of our respect for him and for the role he had as a leader in the clubhouse," Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. "He doesn't appear to be a guy who is done. His arm is still strong, is stuff is good. He just hasn't been consistent."

He went 3-1 with 6.23 ERA in 28 games after signing a $3.5 million, one-year contract as a free agent in December. He was hit hard Tuesday night in one inning against Philadelphia, allowing three runs, three hits and two walks.

The more you think about it, you realize how much of a crapshoot these middle relievers are. They'e good one year, get a good contract, and then are awful the next....I wonder if the Mets will try to claim him....He was really good for them last year..or was it the year before?

Re: Indians cut Hernandez

Roberto barely got playing time last year when he was (re)acquired by the Mets in the Pittsburgh trade that included Oliver Perez for Xavier Nady.

Two years ago, he was probably the Mets best middle reliever. Last year though in the small amount of P.T. he did get, he wasn't the same. However, I've read where he had a great sort of leadership role when it came to Aaron Heilman. I wonder if that will have any role in whether the Mets consider signing him.

My first instinct is no, the Mets won't sign him.
