| Tribe Used Offseason Well As an Indians' fan, I am very satisfied with the deals that General Manager Mark Shapiro has put together to improve the team's roster thus far this hot stove league season. By far the best acquistion, in my opinion, was the trade for Josh Barfield, the new second baseman. His presence will tighten up the infield play, which was anything but excellent last season. Not only that, but he is likely to be an excellent professional hitter, once he get used to American League pitching. The bullpen was significantly solidified as well, what with Borowski, Foulke, Hernandez, and Fultz having been added. When that group is added to the best of the returning relievers from last season, the Indians should be much more capable in the 'pen. The only position that wasn't upgraded is catcher. I have my doubts about Victor Martinez as an everyday catcher, because he is, at best, average defensively. Kelly Shoppach is reasonably solid defensively, but it's unlikely that he'll hit extremely well. If Andy Marte begins to fulfill his offensive promise this year, the Indians should be a contender, at least at the divisional level. |
