Bentley out for season

Forget everything I said about the Cleveland Browns having a chance to win the AFC North in 2006. That all went up in smoke today: center LeCharles Bentley, the big free agent signing who was to anchor the team's offensive line, is now out for the year with a torn left patellar tendon. Move coverage of Bently's injury can be found above.

The Houston Chronicle story describes how the injury occurred: "Blocking for Reuben Droughns on an off-tackle running play, Bentley, who played four years in New Orleans, was briefly engaged in a block up front with nose tackle Ted Washington when his left knee buckled... Bentley screamed, 'No!' and grabbed his knee as coach Romeo Crennel and his staff blew their whistles to halt play."

Re: Browns' bad luck hits early in camp

He'll come back next season. You don't sign a huge contract like that if you're not going to fight your way back from something like this. And with the excitement around the team this season, it'll be all the more motivation for Bentley to work hard in rehab.

This season was and still is looking bright for Browns fans, but I don't think anyone had any serious thoughts of getting deep into the Playoffs or winning the Super Bowl. The Browns have built a solid organization right now and it'll still be exciting to see how many of these recently acquired talents pan out in the long run. Let's just hope that Bentley doesn't turn out to be a Winslow.

Cool Re: Bentley out for season

Boy, it really seems the like the Browns can't get out of their own way. But I agree with BrownsFan4life. THe AFC was too competitive and their schedule too tough for them to make a serious run this year anyway. Maybe next year, things will shake out a little better for them.
