| Winslow reveals reason for hospital stay Following Sunday's 14-11 loss to the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow wanted to get the truth out on what has sidelined him for the previous week. WinslowWinslow told ESPN.com Sunday night that his "unspecified illness" was a staph infection. This is the second time Winslow was diagnosed with staph, and it's at least the sixth known case with the Browns in the past several years. Teammates Joe Jurevicius and Braylon Edwards also are among the recent Cleveland players to contract staph while with the team. Winslow was quiet about his previous condition for nearly two weeks until revealing it Sunday night. "I didn't want to be a distraction and I didn't want it to steer us away from our focus, which was on the Washington Redskins,'' Winslow told ESPN.com. "Then I thought about it, and thought about it, and this is the right thing to do to get it out there and let it be known that this is not right. "They didn't even want me going to the Cleveland Browns' facility because they didn't want me to get re-infected. Something is wrong up there. It needs to be fixed." Winslow spent about a week recuperating and missed the Oct. 13 game against the New York Giants. He said he was very upset with the way the team explained to the media that it was Winslow who didn't want the information public, when Winslow said it was the Browns' idea to hide his condition. "Nobody knew that I had staph on the team because the Browns didn't want it to get out,'' Winslow said. "But it's my teammates' right to know what's going on at the facility to protect them. Their safety is at risk, too, and I didn't agree with the Cleveland Browns, because they are protecting the organization and not the players." | Re: Winslow reveals reason for hospital stay UPDATE: BEREA, Ohio -- Browns coach Romeo Crennel confirmed that tight end Kellen Winslow was hospitalized with a staph infection and may discipline the Pro Bowler for comments made following Sunday's loss to the Washington Redskins. "Sometimes the emotions of the game and the emotions of your personal situation kind of overflow," Crennel said. "So I think he probably said some things that he didn't need to talk about to the media." Winslow spent three days in the Cleveland Clinic with the infection, which has been a problem for the Cleveland Browns in recent years. Last week, the club refused to disclose Winslow's illness. On Sunday, the 25-year-old revealed he had staph and complained about the team's handling of the situation. "We'll investigate it and determine if anything needs to be done," Crennel said. "My policy is to keep family business in the family. So whatever I do, I do and I'm not going to broadcast it." Crennel said they haven't determined whether a fine would be involved for Winslow's comments. "With anybody who has staph, you're talking about your life," said Browns tight end Darnell Dinkins, the team's union representative. "It's bigger than football. It's bigger than a game. Other than that, Kellen is a good friend of mine, so anybody who has a condition or issue like that you want to make sure he is protected and he is healthy." Winslow said he "felt like a piece of meat" and was disappointed general manager Phil Savage didn't check on him when he was in the hospital. ESPN - Browns TE Winslow could face discipline for comments on GM - NFL Sounds like there is somethin definitely goin on in Cleveland. Shame, shame on the Browns. |

| Re: Winslow reveals reason for hospital stay The comments beyond the non release of his ailment seem to me that Winslow is angling to get out of Cleveland. He's clearly unhappy with the direction this team is going and rightfully so! I'm honestly getting tired of watching this team wallow is mediocrity. They're needs to be some drastic changes made to the mind set in Cleveland and I think that starts with this coaching staff. |
