Re: Are the Browns playoff contenders?

Can the Browns make the playoffs? I think so, and so does USA Today's Chris Colston.

"This year's surprise team could be the Cleveland Browns, he says. "Don't let those plain orange helmets fool you; the Browns might be ready to turn their opponents black and blue. After going 6-10 last year, general manager Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel identified the three primary needs, then went out and addressed them. Combine that with a solid draft... and the healthy return of their last two first-round picks, tight end Kellen Winslow and wide receiver Braylon Edwards, and you can see why optimism is high around Lake Erie."

What do you guys think? Are the Browns contenders or pretenders?

Re: Browns in the playoffs? Let me count the obstacles

Hmm... this article makes a good point. I hadn't considered the schedule strength.

"The Browns' schedule features both the NFC South and the AFC West this year," the writer says. "Coupled with one of the toughest divisions in football, this means that the Browns must defeat both the returning losers of the championship games and the Super Bowl Champs of last year... So in all likelihood, if the Browns are to make the playoffs this year they are going to have to do it with nine wins and by the skins of their noses."

Re: Browns in the playoffs? Let me count the obstacles

If Vinny Testaverde is the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns then the season is over before it begins. Doesnt matter strength of schedule. You could play the 16 worst teams in the NFL and they will stack the run and force Vinny to do his best 1980 Muhammad Ali impression. Start Frye and let him bond with Edwards who wont be full speed till next year anyway. Then perhaps you can discuss playoffs. Yknow, if the Browns wanted a veteran QB so bad why the hell didnt they just keep Trent Dilfer????

Frye is the starter; they want Vinnie as a veteran backup.

Re: Are the Browns playoff contenders?

Dorsey is better than Vinnie. At this point Heath Shuler is better than Vinnie.
