Browns could have fooled us--and did

By NEWY SCRUGGS Special to the Star-Telegram Christmas is just a few days away and I feel the need to come out and publicly apologize to Fox Sports Net Ohio's Kendall Lewis and all Cleveland Browns fans. Before the 2007 season, I wrote a column saying the Browns would deliver a top-10 draft pick to the Cowboys in 2008. The Cowboys traded the 22nd pick in the 2007 NFL Draft to Cleveland, which selected quarterback Brady Quinn out of Notre Dame. I was sure Quinn would be playing by Week 7 or 8 and then the Browns would be trucking toward doom and gloom. Oops. I was wrong. Dead wrong. The Cleveland Browns are heading to the playoffs, and might even win the NFC North. If I could vote for the NFL Coach of the Year, I'd give it to Browns coach Romeo Crennel.
Don't I look like the dunce? I'm not alone. Almost every publication and NFL writer had the Browns coming in dead-last and their coach the first to be fired.
Crennel deserves the NFL Coach of the Year award and a big apology from me and the rest of the media.

I agree. Just the other day I heard this unbelievable stat - their offensive line has given up roughly half as many sacks this year as they did last year. The play up front has been much better, they've found their QB in Derek Anderson, and Jamal Lewis has been much better than expected (still would like them get a younger back in the draft too, though). And Braylon Edwards is a Pro Bowl caliber receiver. Here's hoping they make the playoffs.

I am happy for Romeo. I thought he was doing a good job, but didn't have the talent to play on the pro level. Now he has a hot young team to lead.
