Fred "Dippy" Evans, who scored the Browns' first points and set an NFL record for fumbles recovered for touchdowns in one game, died Thursday at age 86.
The Cleveland resident was among the first players signed by legendary coach Paul Brown for his fledgling Cleveland Browns of the All-America Football Conference. Evans scored the team's inaugural points in a preseason game on Aug. 30, 1946, against the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Rubber Bowl in Akron.
In an obituary published on the Browns Web site, sportswriter Steve King wrote: "He made a one-handed catch of a seven-yard pass from Cliff Lewis for a TD to provide the Browns with their first points, and then closed the team's scoring in a 35-20 triumph when he intercepted a Glenn Dobbs pass and returned it 83 yards for another TD."
