Browns Criticized For Signing Mason

As the NFL continues to clamp down on misbehaving players, the problem of having bad boys on the roster won't change as long as teams continue to draft and/or sign them.
In the case of receiver Mike Mason, a league source tells us that many teams had him off of their draft boards due to past problems with the law, which were well publicized.
But the Browns took a chance on him as an undrafted free agent, and his arrest for three misdemeanors charges shows that this specific experiment blew up in their faces.
Opined one league source: "It makes the league look terrible when all the information is available and individual teams fail to create an absolute character standard. You can talk about the players all you want but until the teams begin to get vigilant in their own dealings with bad actors, this thing will remain ugly."
Upon promulgating a new Personal Conduct Policy in April, Commisioner Roger Goodell suggested that teams who harbor turds will face potential consequences. If so, the Browns should be the first in line for some type of a sanction due to their decision to ink Mason.

Re: Browns Criticized For Signing Mason

Okay, so I'm torn on this. Yes, you'd like to always be able to find character guys. But I want to know this kid's record. Kicked off the Tar Heels in 2005. Anything after that, or did he keep his nose clean? I would hate it if Goodell legislates this to the point where a team can't at least give a kid like this a chance to turn his life around.

Re: Browns Criticized For Signing Mason

For those who missed this story, it appears that Mason, according to the AP, "refused demands from two off-duty police officers to leave a downtown nightclub at closing time and was arrested, a police spokesman said... Mason struggled with one of the officers and was shocked with a stun gun, Lt. Thomas Stacho said Monday. Police charged Mason, 22, with aggravated disorderly conduct, obstructing official business and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors, Stacho said."

In my opinion, this guy wasn't a gem before he reached 21. Now that he can legally purchase alcohol, look out. I think the Browns made a foolish mistake by signing him.

i don't think they should be condemned for taking a chance on the kid. They had to have interviewed him and decided he turned things around. It is their risk. If he makes them look stupid for taking the chance, they will get penalized
